What is America's ranking in education?
The U.S. ranks 17th in educational performance. According to the report, The Learning Curve, developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the United States ranks seventeenth out of forty countries ranked in overall educational performance. Finland ranks first.

That's fucking sad. Go ahead and talk to kids nowadays. You'll see for yourself. It's true.

Sadly, you are very correct. They have no work ethic, either. I'm one of the last of the Baby Boomer generation, and work ethic was drilled into me.

Sadly, you are very correct. They have no work ethic, either. I'm one of the last of the Baby Boomer generation, and work ethic was drilled into me. True. But it's not ALL their fault. The education system has fallen low all on its own. In many it has let them down. Also the economy is worse now than it was for us or our parents. There was a time when you could rent an apartment and make a living on a regular job. Not nowadays. While expenses have gone up, wages have not. Its harder to make a living now, hence why we see so many young people staying at home so much longer. The whole thing is a big mess.
But I have always believed that education is the way to brighter futures.

All of what you have said is true. But I think there is an additional factor - motivation. Kids see the world around them and think, "Why bother? It's so messed up, what is the point of trying to improve it or me?" It takes a certain mindset, which occurs less often nowadays, to overcome the ennui that seems to have pervaded thought in this country. The current political scene hasn't helped, with our "leader" pandering to the lowest common denominators. Or perhaps I am just older, more tired and jaded.

There's no one thing.

Part of the problem is with teachers who have the midset of "I can't do it or understand it so let's not teach it anymore" and they get things dropped from the curriculum and think … "Well, that's a relief ! I won't haver to try to teach THAT anymore !"
and
The few students who ARE truly motivated are often given assorted negative labels by the majority un-motivated and social interpersonal stuff results. Teachers often resent these particularly bright students and view them as some sort of a negative challenge ie "How do I deal with someone who is brighter than I am ?."
