tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheManBehindTheManMaybe not so much Thanos is working for someone more powerful than him but there is something more sinister going on and another being is maybe just using Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones to wipe out half the universe. There is a theory going around that Thanos really wanted to wipe out half the universe to stop Galactus. Personally, I think it'd be cool if it were Mephisto maybe pulling a few strings for his own agenda. Plus it'd be a great way to bridge the way to a Ghost Rider film. Thanos and Mephisto have quite a rivalry in the comics, with different philosophy and ideals that I'd love to see on the big screen.

I don’t think someone is using Thanos, but instead the snap will inadvertently create a new villain. Like Galactus will go on a rampage because no planets have enough sustinence for him, and he’ll search for those reasponsible. Or perhaps Kang will come to our time looking for who is messing with the time continuum after the Avengers use the gauntlet to restore everyone.

It would be an interesting subversion, and it could work, but I prefer it when Thanos is mentally insane in his motives. That’s what makes him a great villain; you know where he’s coming from but he’s still crazy.

I hope not. Thanos should be the guy at the top of the bad guy pyramid for the time being. Start a new one once Endgame is over.
