So we just finished and furnished our basement, now we just need a tv. I’ve come to the conclusion that there are effectively only 3 brands of TVs - Samsung, and Sony / LG. I listed them that way because Samsung uses a technology called QLED, and the other two use true OLED. Additionally, LG manufactures the displays used in Sony TVs. So which do I get? I have room for a 65”. Almost pulled the trigger on a Samsung Q8 series today but am putting it off another week. Samsung’s are slightly more affordable and I have other smaller lower end Samsungs already and they look fine. But the Sony / LG models look even better (slightly) but cost more. Thoughts? Opinions both good or bad on a brand? Thanks in advance for your help.

If it's for your basement did you consider a projector instead? I hear they are pretty good these days.

hh Gregg (think they're out of business now) had 70 inches out there. here's what you do - get the biggest possible at the cheapest rate to watch the flyers, phillies, eagles and sixers on and your favorite DVDs. one of my first big purchases was from Circuit City - an old school Box Style 55 incher from Circuit City for $2500 that I made 'payments' on. there's nothing like a giant screen TV to come home to after work and have a few beers and relax watching a Phillies game in the Spring, Summer, Fall........... BIGGEST Screen Possible - who cares about the 'Quality' - BIGGEST Possible - I can't state this enough It's pretty much stating 'my dick is bigger than yours' when your neighbor and his wife pop over for some hot dogs and beer in the summer

Had an LG but the backlight went in less than 2 years (no warranty). Too expensive to fix so we had to get a new TV, a Samsung. Seems a lot easier to use than the LG. A friend of mine had an LG before me but returned it right away. Didn't like the way it worked. He also got a Samsung and likes it much better.

I tend to go Samsung because they also do some great soundbars/sub woofers which work superbly together with the television. Cant justify a QLED (pretty much identical to OLED) as my current 55 inch is only about a year old and paying about £1500-2000 seems rather over the top. Also of course 4k sets are starting to creep in at ridiculous price admittedly but in 2 years? maybe.

I got a new TV around this time last year, and I was doing about a year and half of research leading up to it. I kind of figured out that there was no one right decision or time to buy. I was biding my time waiting for the right moment, but the technology changes so fucking fast that no matter when you buy your purchase will be out of date in a few months anyway. The big thing is to figure what new innovation is actually going to last and what's a fad. A few years ago 3D TVs were the supposed must-have technology, and now nobody wants anything to do with it.
The newest models a now 8K TVs, but there's hardly any way to get even true 4K content onto your screen so it seems to me that the 4K screen is going to be the standard until the broadcasters and streaming services catch up to the TV capabilities.
I looked as QLED and OLED and went back and forth a million times. Ultimately I settled on Samsung QLED. It seemed to have the best overall ratings and reviews for the cost. They're not cheap, but it's a very reliable brand with a good stable build, good on board speakers, very intuitive smart functions, and great step up in picture quality from what we had. There are all sorts sites that will rate the picture based on whether your more interest in sports, video games, blu ray, etc. I didn't have particular use in mind, I dont have a game system, I just wanted a good overall TV.
When I bought my TV it was already a year old so I thought it was a pretty good deal at the time, now of course the same model is about a thousand dollars cheaper. Oh well. Previously I had a super old 62 inch (when they still made that size) screen that was a dicsontinued screen technology and was intent on getting something bigger if I was gonna replace it. Since nobody makes a 70 inch anymore I went with a QLED 75 inch at a pretty decent discount from Wal Mart. I searched forever and finally pulled the trigger when I found a good deal, and I have mo complaints at all. It looks great, I finally have streaming abilities and connectivity on my TV itself, the picture and brightness is a huge step up, and the size is not overwhelming in the space because the image looks good from every angle.
Really the only frustrating thing is that cable doesn't offer 4K content and anything that doesn't look that great is more noticeable because it's stretched out to fit a bigger canvas. I'll need to finally invest in a UHD blu ray player to get the most out of it, from what I understand, but for my purposes it's great.
I'm sure the OLEDs are great too, and some people are partial to their brands, but from my research it seemed like you couldn't go wrong with the value from Samsung.

Go for a TV with a faster processor, it makes a difference. Bigger doesn’t mean better, it all depends on how far the seats are from the screen. There are easy calculations you can run to maximize the quality, sometimes a 75 is too big for the room, and sometimes a 55 is too small. An easy google search on that will steer you right. But for me, the processor is the key.
Are you getting a receiver and surround as well?

Bought one of the last 3D LG's a few years ago and it just keeps blowing me away like yesterday watching War ftPot Apes. I went from Samsung to LG unlike the others on here but really just go with the reviews online and you cant go wrong
If youre watching 4K you really need the biggest possible, I hardy noticed the difference between HD and 4K on my 55'er

So it turns out that the Samsung TVs you can see and buy at Best Buy now are 2018 models, and the 2019 ones come out in a month or so. That means all the 2018 ones are on sale. I ended up getting the Samsung Q6F 65”. It’s the entry level QLED but it was on sale for under $1200. They were sold out everywhere of the Q7, and the 8 & 9 we’re still a bit out of my budget. No complaints, beautiful picture. I bought a 4K DVD player, a Yamaha soundbar with subwoofer, and Planet Earth II in 4K. These aren’t tears, there must be something in my eye.

Unfortunately being in the basement there’s one unmovable beam that caused us to have to resort to a funky layout of the furniture and tv stand. There isn’t a logical way we can do surround yet. So I got a soundbar. It’s decent sound for now. Maybe one day I’ll figure out other options.

jesus dude - it's a TV to watch sports and movies on - it's not some Indiana Jones scroll you're purchasing that unlocks the mystery of life........

Bought one of the last 3D LG's a few years ago and it just keeps blowing me away like yesterday watching War ftPot Apes. I like my 3D TV too. Shame that 3D didn't catch. I buy 3D Blu-Rays when possible, but fewer and fewer new movies are even being released in 3D. Just the other day I watched "The Martian" and the 3D was great. I think it is better than in the theatres.

Yeah The Martian is one of the few 3D discs I have, luckily here in Ireland/UK with a Sky subscription, we're still getting the most up to date 3D movies, the latest Jurassic Park was just last week. Watched PotApes, Wonder Woman(fun) and The Last Jedi(nowhere near as bad as I've heard) over the weekend. I think the 3D experience at home is the closest feeling to the olden days in the cinema. Hopefully Camerons return of Avatars next year gets the tv companies making 3D tv's again, 4k 3D would be very cool indeed

No point in me buying a 4K TV as my broadband can't handle streaming that. And the 4K discs are too expensive.
