Here's a drinking game for when you watch LIFE ITSELF: Take a shot every time a couple is lying in bed during daytime. Chapter 1 is about a couple named WILL & ABBY DEMPSEY. She has a very fake-looking pregnancy belly and he's the source of blunt offbeat humour (which rarely works). He also constantly talks about script writing rules/tropes, but he does it with such a smug attitude.

It's eventually revealed that ABBY is dead and WILL is traumatized by it. You'd think that, at this point, we've followed him along for so long so we can see his recovery, but he shoots himself. Is it done in a way that delivers a nihilistic message? No. Is it played for laughs to parody movies of this sub-genre? No.
Look: Doing something unexpected doesn't automatically count as subversion. It felt like the whole subplot was a waste of time, especially with a character that (despite all his flaws) was presented as someone we had to root for. Chapter 2 is about their daugther DYLAN. She has been acting out for years (due to her upbringing). Despite that, nothing of real substance happens in this segment. Chapter 3 is about a couple named JAVIER & ISABEL GONZALEZ and his boss MR. SACCIONE. Not only we go to another country, but there are no more 4th-wall-breaking moments. It feels like a different movie, but I didn't mind it so much because this segment was moving. Chapter 4 is about their son RODRIGO. He's in college, even though he and his mom looks like they're the same age.I also found this segment moving... until the ending where RODRIGO meets his future wife DYLAN and the narration tells us everything that happens from that point on.
What?! That doesn't earn a chapter of its own? Isn't one of the things that tie all the characters together that they don't try their best or try at all to solve their personal issues? In that sense, writer/director Dan Fogelman chose not to solve her issues (on screen, at least). Instead, he fills the running time with details about some of the characters' pasts that are ultimately irrelevant and he ends the movie with one of those montages about the importance of life. The imagery, music and choice of words make it feel like a video you'd get on a WhatsApp group. That being said, every actor gives it their all, which helps the movie stay afloat. Although, I wish the Spanish actors hadn't said so many of their lines in such a low volume.5/10
