Adding Sydney Pollack, an important one that I don't think has been mentioned yet. He had a great career, winning 2 Oscars (for OUT OF AFRICA (1985)), and was nominated for 5 more. Here, directing his pal Robert Redford: One of my favorites of all his films is the brilliant, THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY (1969). Here, he's directing Jane Fonda in that (can't see his face, sad to say; but his presence was powerful): And directing Redford and Natalie Wood in another favorite, THIS PROPERTY IS CONDEMNED:

Have we mentioned Rob Reiner? He has directed son good films, A Few Good Men and Princess Bride. His cameos tend to be substantial as in Primary Colors and Bullets Over Broadway.

Yes, Rob Reiner belongs here for sure. And his father, Carl Reiner, had a long career acting, writing, producing, and directing, too. My favorite of his directorial efforts was his film debut, ENTER LAUGHING.

Bryan Forbes (1926 - 2013) maybe also should be mentioned. He went from actor to actor-screenwriter to director-screenwriter. Making such movies as Whistle Down the Wind 1961, The L-Shaped Room 1962, Séance on a Wet Afternoon 1964, King Rat 1965, The Wrong Box 1966, The Whisperers 1967, Deadfall 1968, The Madwoman of Chaillot 1969, The Raging Moon 1971, The Stepford Wives 1974 and a few more.
