I remember watching this twice on television in the early 70's. The protagonist is a drag racer who starts experiencing wholly surreal and creepy hallucinations after an accident in which a fireball envelops him. Very likely it was a made-for-tv movie or even an episode of an anthology series. At the end of the story, the driver is cured, but then has another accident and the hallucinations return.
It's not "Baffled," starring Leonard Nimoy.

Apparently it was an episode ("Death is the Fifth Gear") of "Mannix" from the show's fifth season. Some of it seems very different from what I remembered, some of it is spot on. I was only about 5 when it aired, so my lapse in memory can be excused.
