Though I don't believe it was a drastic situation like the Bond films faced with Spectre or something. Seems like Abrams just really wants it to work as a standalone movie. TEXT: As Daisy Ridley recalled when asked how she found out about The Rise of Skywalker’s ending: "...J.J. had told me and then I read the script, and then it was sort of shifting. The ending was always pretty similar, and then I was told there was a new, I guess, a slightly different beat added that I was told, which was awesome. Because it's nice to be told a thing, and then you can experience it with the filmmaker. But also, we don't always know how it's going to turn out. We did the thing on this side of the camera, but we don't know how it's going to turn out. So I'm as excited to see it as everyone else."
But while The Rise of Skywalker is the final installment in a long running franchise, the director also took care to craft an independent story that stands on its own. As he recently explained at Star Wars Celebration: "...Also, this movie, in addition to being the end of three trilogies, also needs to work as its own movie. That’s been part of the fun of it, part of the challenge of it. This movie is about this new generation and what they’ve inherited: the light and the dark. And asking the question as they face the greatest evil: Are they prepared? Are they ready? It’s been really incredible to look at this thing George has created and bring it to a close in this way."www.cinemablend.com/news/2470351/star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalkers-ending-was-changed-during-filmingwww.cinemablend.com/news/2470367/why-star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker-needs-to-work-as-a-standalone-movie-according-to-jj-abrams

Yes! I knew it. J.J. totally wants to seperate TROS from TLJ. That’s my interpretation. I am certain that J.J. hates TLJ, and anything he says contrary to that is simply public relations.

In other words, "I'm doing my best to pretend TLJ never happened; and hopefully the audience can, too."

Still with the fantasies of TLJ being retconned.

According to Ridley: "...a slightly different beat added..." is not a big deal at all. That sort of thing happens ALL THE TIME in movies. I'd be surprised if it didn't.
