Just picked up Hellboy II: The Golden Army for 4 Euro this evening. Have never bothered to watch these films in the past, but they actually look pretty interesting. I loved Blade II and Pan's Labyrinth and would be a big superhero movie fan, so these might be right up my alley.
Thoughts/opinions on the old Hellboy movies (the Del Toro ones, I mean)?

They're both very good they both have good villains hellboy's very charismatic, some very good dialogue. Prince nuada the villain in the second movie is very quotable. Both movies are just a lot of fun they have dark moments and also some beautiful moments two of the better superhero movies out there in my opinion

They're great fun. Ron Perlman is awesome as always. I like the second film just a tad more but Karl Ruprecht Kroenen was such a cool and interesting side villain in the first movie.

Both excellent films with excellent SFX.
I thought the 2nd one was a little better

Both are solid movies due in large part to Ron Perlman's performance and Del Toro's visual creativity.

I love both movies and own both on DVD. The first one was inspired by a few Mike Mignola graphic novels: The second was an original story. I think I prefer the second, but there are both excellent. And the quote thread was a lot of fun!

They’re decent fun. I was expecting more but I had fun in the end. Second one is a bit better I guess.

Both good movies, but the 2nd one less so.
I wish they would have made a third instead of a needless reboot.

I love the first one and really enjoyed the second. It’s a shame that GDT couldn’t complete the series.

They are decent.
One good thing with Del Toro is that he treats fantasy seriously (when he wants to). Unlike a Disney MCU film, the humor arises from the character situations naturally, not shoe-horned in for a cheap laugh.
They did get some emotional poignancy as well--like the end of the first one where he mentions how he told the demons to let what's her name come back. I overlook it as a superhero category I guess because it is an occult thing.
The FX were well handled too--like when Krauss takes over the Golden army soldier.
Too bad they didn't do a third one. There was a rumor that Del Toro wanted to do a Hellboy meets the Universal Monsters story which would use CG versions of Karloff/Lugosi/Chaney etc...

Pan's Labyrinth handled the fantasy elements extremely well. They weren't my favourite parts of that film, mind you, but Del Toro clearly knew what he was doing in tackling that sort of material.

Both are fun light-hearted action romps. Before superhero and genre properties went all "grim & gritty", it was nice to have a pair of superhero adventures that were simply about creating a fantasy universe and having fun with it.
Ron Perlman is also great as the title character. He gets the dry humor of the character and also makes you care about him. I can't think of anyone else playing it as well as he did. Guillermo Del Toro also did a good job in balancing the action, horror, humor and fantasy elements throughout.
A damn shame we never got a third installment. They did make a couple of animated Hellboy films in between films 1&2 and feature the voice talents of Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and John Hurt, so give these a look if you're a fan of the Perlman/Del Toro films.
