It's like totally all over the place, lyrically and musically. Does not flow anyhow whatsoever.

Brilliant intro riff. I agree, otherwise, it's a bit of a mess. Lyrics - overwrought much?

And I contend that album suffers from over-complexity.

Metallica was always overrated, listen to some Ministry instead.

I liked the song and the album, but felt it was mixed and engineered all wrong. Metallica's 2nd-4th albums were the best..."Ride the Lightning","Master of Puppets", "And Justice For All" WERE their best! When they hit the mainstream later is when I feel they were over-rated!

It's emotionally effective though.

I've never understood people accusing that song of being "musically all over the place." I actually find it one of their simpler and more coherent longer songs, and I think the musical bridges between the sections are actually quite effective: eg, the double bass drum pattern that leads to the "machine gun" riff towards the end. The former grows organically out of the escalating tension of that section, and when it falls away it naturally leads to the next riff.

Personally I hate the song. But I won't say it's not a good song. I just can't listen to it. Though at the time I really liked the rest of the album.

I personally love it. Superb epic treat that seems to get better over the years. Musically all over the place? One it's attractions.

Liked it when I was a teenager. If there's a pre-Black Album Metallica song that suffered from overplay, it's this one.

It's the song that got me in to Metallica.
Happiness is driving home from work on the express highway with One blaring thru the stereo.

^^^ THIS.
It's a good song. But it's basically Metallica's Stairway to Heaven. And much like Stairway, I never need to hear it again.

Heresy. Quite the hot take though, next "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden is garbage as well as Judas Priest "Painkiller". Popular = sucks for some after all.

I would think Fade to Black is their Stairway. Other than the horrible production overall of the ...And Justice for All album, there’s nothing wrong with One.

Fade to Black and Master of Puppets are similar.
But it's One that is the most popular and overplayed which is why I compared it to Stairway.
