Happy Birthday Shirley MacLaine!!! The Trouble With Harry. Of all people to give MacLaine her first screen role: Alfred Hitchcock! And she embodied that old show-biz cliche that never happens, except when it does: stepping out of the chorus and going on for the star on just the right night to be "discovered." She never lost her affection for "the gypsies." The Liza Minnelli show The Act featured a number by the chorus that covers a costume change: So the star leaves the stage to change her clothesAnd the crowd grows restless, their anxiety showsAnd their hostile posture seems to say"When will she be back?""Who the hell are they?"But the knowledgeable gypsy knowsIt's ridiculous to throw a fitThat's the way things areWhen they pay to see a starBut...Little do they knowAnd little do they seeWithout us in supportWithout us paying courtHow lousy she might beMacLaine was backstage one night, grabbing everyone in sight - friend (Minnelli, Bella Abzug, for instance) and stranger (me and my companion, for instance) alike - by the shoulders and enthusing, "Weren't they wonderful?" And we all knew who she was talking about.

Doghouse6 Yes, what a magical turn MacLaine's life took that night in "The Pajama Game." The stuff that dreams are made of. And thanks for sharing your wonderful personal story. I can only imagine how great that must have been.

I love Shirley! She's someone who I always thought would be so fun to be friends with. Maybe there's still a chance. Happy Birthday, Ms. MacLaine. Call me!

I can only imagine how great that must have been. That show didn't have a large chorus; four boys and four girls, I think, but I learned later that evening from one of them that, before she'd come upstairs to where Minnelli, Barry Nelson and other featured players had their private dressing rooms, MacLaine had been downstairs to the "collective" ones to congratulate each one of them personally. Those were the visits she felt it important to make first, and was still bubbling with the excitement of meeting them - just like a giddy fan - when she came up to "schmooze with the stars." That number from which I quoted finishes in a way that's so apropos of what you say about "the stuff that dreams are made of" and about MacLaine herself: Yet I have a dream That isn't mine alone Each gypsy that you see Is just the same as me The fact is widely known Someday I'll go so far That I'll become a star With gypsies of my own

Says a lot to me about how she never forgot where she came from; her roots as a background player, so to speak. I know actors like that who became stars, but they always remembered to cherish and help those on the way up. Good for her for remembering those following in her footsteps. I know it meant a lot to them.

Just rewatched a few weeks ago on TCM Around the World in 80 Days, the movie I don't get the hate from the cinephiles. She was very cute in the movie.

Anna 'Kennedy' Kendrick performed for her idol Shirley MacLaine when she received the Kennedy Center Honors. Kendrick is said to be the third youngest Tony nominee ever, for 'High Society'. She had performed Stephen Sondheim's 'A Little Night Music' aged 17, 11 years before her starring role in 'Into The Woods' (2014). Now, MacLaine is joining Kendrick for the Christmas fantasy 'Noelle' (2019).
Sondheim was always Addison De Witt's favourite over on the old imdb Classics board (nostalgia). This potential Xmas treat entitled 'Noelle' is under wraps but bound to be a blockbuster. It'll be great seeing Shirley MacLaine live out another seasonal fantasy.
