If the original six Avengers were to be replaced with some of the newer characters, who would be the best fit?
Listed below are the characters whom I think would be the best (hypothetical) replacements for the original six Avengers. Note that I specifically excluded any members of the GOTG since they already have their own group.
1. The Godfather – this is Tony Stark. He provides their base of operations and grants them majority of their resources. More importantly, outside of combat he’s usually the main person responsible for organizing them as a team. He’s also one of their main sources for intel.
Who’s the best replacement for this position? Well, Doctor Strange. His mansion can be their base of operations (and has served as such in the comics). He has a good amount of resources that the team could use. Maybe not monetary but that can be easily supplied by a different member (more on this later). What he lacks in technology he more than makes up for in magic. So instead of providing the team with a jet to travel he’ll simply open portals for them. And instead of enhancing their weapons with technology he can enhance them with magic.
In terms of personality they’re very similar. Both are snarky but charismatic, smart-mouthy, have a bit of an ego, they plan and think of the future, and they even have similar facial hair.
2. The Leader – if the Godfather is the producer of the movie, this position is the director. Obviously this position is currently filled by Captain America, and the best person to replace him would be Black Panther. Both are experienced in leading troupes into battle, both are loved by the people they lead, both are expert melee fighters, they even have similar super powers. Both are also powerful enough that they can provide a challenge to high-end opponents but not too powerful that they’re not relatable to those under them.
T’Challa also has a similar nobility and earnestness to Cap. He’s just as refreshingly straightforward and they even both have vibranium equipment. The main difference is that T'Challa will probably be the main financial and tech supplier of the group.
3. The Enforcer – put simply, this is their most powerful member. Their biggest gun, the one who deals with the biggest threats. But more than just a thuggish tough-guy, the Enforcer also needs to be knowledgeable about the world they operate in. They may not be the smartest member of the group but they do have a lot of street-smarts and street-cred.
This title is currently held by Thor. He may not be the strongest member of the original six but he’s definitely the most powerful. More than that, he’s the most widely traveled and knowledgeable about the cosmos (street-smarts) and has the most combat experience (street cred). Who should replace him?
Captain Marvel. Extremely powerful? Check. Cosmic traveler? Check. Older than the rest of the team? Check. Possibly the most combat experienced of the team? Check. Blonde? Check.
I know Feige originally said Carol was supposed to be the new face/leader of the MCU, hinting that she’ll be replacing either Stark or Rogers or both… but I think that would be a mistake. She neither has the same charisma as Stark nor the earnest likeability of Rogers. What she does have is the cocky brashness reminiscent of young Thor, and it’s those shoes that she’ll fit the best.
4. The Mascot – The Mascot is probably the most recognizable face of the team… at least when they’re in costume. When not in costume they fly under the radar of the general population. In the current team this is Hulk. His newer counterpart would be Spiderman.
In their superhero personas, they’re some of the most widely recognizable superheroes. But as their alternate identities, they’re relatively unknown by the greater population. You don’t see people dressing up with Bruce Banner costumes, Spiderman (at least currently) is taking great pains to keep his identity secret.
Both are very smart and a bit socially awkward as their alternate identities. When in superhero form, Hulk has a hard time conversing with his teammates due to his toddler-like intellect and Spiderman has a hard time connecting due to his age gap. Both are not trained fighters yet they more than make-up for it with their heightened physicality. Hulk being his strength and durability, Spiderman in his agility and reflexes.
5. The Super-spy – this is Black Widow. Her new counterpart? Wasp. Both are tough, attractive, sassy women. Both use some form of wrist blasters. Both throw weaponized discs at their opponents. Both are skilled hand to hand fighters.
The Wasp doesn’t have the spy training that Natasha has but her ability to shrink in size and fly would make her very capable in espionage.
6. The Marksman – Obviously this is Hawkeye. His closest counterpart? Bucky. Obviously they have very different personalities, and their weapon of choice is different. But both enjoy using ranged weapons (especially when you consider how Bucky was portrayed in CATWS). Both use different ammo to go between clean, sniping kills to large explosives. Both are trained spies. Both are skilled hand to hand combatants.
Both of them also share the commonality of using a knife against their best friend during their first hand to hand fight scene on screen.
So that’s that. What do you guys think?
