My first viewing of Falling Down was at 16, and at that time I thought that it was a pretty unique and exciting movie about a guy which just loses it on a hot afternoon. I forgot about it for many years before rewatching it recently. This time I see it as a far smarter venture. Parts of this movie are so painfully true that it borders on dark humour. Douglas gives a stellar performance as the engineer who has been left behind in the societal machine, a replaceable component of a system he once understood. I'm not saying that I agree with the fairly negative tone in which this movie blares at full volume throughout, but it certainly supplies a thought provoking message. I think it's well written, well acted, and ultimately, even slightly believable. It's not without some flaws, but a movie that manages to simultaneously entertain whilst providing this level of intellectual stimulation is something of a rarity in my opinion. "I'm the bad guy?" My rating: 8/10

6 1/2/10. Good idea but hampered by the inconsistent approach. On one hand its about urban frustrations, yet they kept undercutting the tensions with humor--like in the fastfood restaurant. If he was presented as a borderline psycho to be feared, and then had him more sympathetic right at the end, it would have worked better. Too many scenes of him being emotional (the swimming pool). The best scenes are the ones where is is being confrontational--so they should have cut all the comedy antics (except maybe the "what's your movie called?" "Under Construction" part).
