Being bad is a perception.
George Washington is a villain to the Brits, but an American hero.

I'm trying to remember when a bad guy won against me.
I may need more detail.

Like what, for example? Maybe I'm just nit watching enough new movies to see it. Sane as it's always been, as far as I've noticed.

But the bad guys don't always win. Perhaps not, but sure feels that way at times. I was just watching an interview with Steven Pinker about that. He argues that the world is actually better off - and has been getting better off for well over fifty years - in virtually every measurable way. Less crime, less pollution, less famine, less disease, fewer people living in poverty, and on and on. We are literally living in the best time in human existence. But that doesn't sell newspapers or get news viewers. So we all get a constant drumbeat of "Crime! Terrorism! Violence! Hate! Corruption!" and it seems like the world is going mad. But it really isn't.

In my reading of this era in Modern History, King George III was more seen as the villain and the king who lost the American colonies!

But it really isn't. Progress has been made sure, but it's far slower than it ought to have been. Humanity has the capacity to be living in a utopia right now. In some ways things have actually got worse in recent years with climate change, increasing inequality, casualisation of work and austerity. What sparked me to create this thread apart from maybe having a bit too much to drink was looking at the results of the Northern Ireland council elections. Sure there were a couple of encouraging results but it was mostly the bastards dominating again. Then in England it was much the same - the Conservatives lost a lot of seats but are still by far the biggest party and the party that won most of those seats were the barely less horrible Lib Dems. Then in the US you have corporatist Democrats moving to ensure Bernie Sanders or Tulsi Gabbard do not get the presidential nomination. The Americas and Europe are witnessing the rise of the far right while the EU continues to economically decimate southern Europe in the interests of multinational shareholders. And that's not even getting into issues like the Middle East, Venezuela, Sri Lanka, China, India and Pakistan, and North Korea. If this is indeed the best time to be alive, it really doesn't say much for the rest of human history.

If Hitler had won the war... We'd all be celebrating Hitler's Birthday... honoring that time that he wiped out all of those "evil Jews" for us. History is told by the victors.

Apparently he wanted them to pay a bit more taxes towards the wars fought against the French and the Natives and the Americans disagreed and decided that they quite liked the French actually.
