New York is no stranger to producing photographers who've embarked upon adventurous careers within the experimental film world. A comparison could be drawn between burly New Yorker Mark Baranowski and provocateur Richard Kern who's originally from Roanoke Rapids in North Carolina. Baranowski's film career has played out in North Carolina, the state he's made his home. His films are populated with friends and local performers as well as professional actors. Kern left North Carolina for New York, where he became a pivotal part of the underground filmmaking scene. Baranowski and Kern have both shot music videos and published volumes of artistic erotica. They also both hold down strong ties to New York's world-famous fetish scene, a milieu that was evoked just this week by musician Lady Gaga during her 16-minute striptease entrance at the 2019 Met Gala (the Costume Institute Gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the biggest events on the fashion fundraising calendar). Baranowski has worked with some of the horror industry's signature performers including Suzi Lorraine, Lynn Lowry, Monique Parent, Brinke Stevens and Rachelle Williams. His scratchy, self-produced films have earned him the title 'Master of Microbudget Cinema' which is something he's extremely proud of. Singer and burlesque dancer Ryli Morgan is his artistic muse and she appears in the majority of his feature-length movies. These films are weighted heavily towards the crime genre but take in comedy, horror and classical melodrama too. Morgan's complex portrayals of women-in-peril have drawn inspiration from some of her own role models, including Canadian screen icon Fay Wray, actress, artist and director Lung Leg of Minneapolis, Minnesota, actress, musician, writer and designer Linnea Quigley of Davenport, Iowa, and actress, writer and biologist Brinke Stevens of San Diego, California.
What are some of your favourite Mark Baranowski movies?
Thanks.

I've seen most of Mark Baranowski's films. He shoots, edits and scores them which sounds impressive, and it is, but they are cheaply made and technically very shaky. I like them because he's a solid storyteller and he has a terrific central performer in Ryli Morgan. Despite this, Baranowski almost always puts himself centre stage, often as a brooding anti-hero experiencing girl trouble. The horror short 'Despair' (2001) is a good introduction to his work. I'd also recommend 'Heaven Help Me, I'm In Love' (2005) to anybody who likes romantic comedies.
I currently have the book ‘From Despair To Beloved : The Provocative Cinema Of On Mark Productions’ on order, which I'm looking forward to reading.
"I have most enjoyed meeting and becoming friends with Brinke Stevens. I wasn't introduced to her work as early as that of others but I fell in love with her work and her presence on screen instantly, and she's simply a doll in real life. I truly love her passion, and I find her fascinating -- not only is she gorgeous, but she's got a brain, as well, and isn't afraid to show that.
That's another thing I'm still in a bit of shock over. I'm honoured to be included in that "group", but I still feel like such a beginner, and to be considered in the same league as Linnea Quigley, Brinke, Michelle Bauer, et al., is just amazing. Honestly, a dream come true."
