The 'Faces Of Schlock' horror anthology series provided a launchpad for several film careers, including that of director Chris LaMartina. His family and friends helped get the young horror obsessive's career up and running, contributing to the finance and resources behind his first solo feature 'Dead Teenagers' (2007), as well as physically helping out on set ('Dead Teenagers' was largely shot at LaMartina's aunt's house in Baltimore, Maryland, over a period of two years). The family's efforts have been repaid handsomely by the many intriguing films he's gone on to direct. LaMartina's colourful horror movies are characterised by expression, reflecting his passion for classical authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Ambrose Bierce and H.P. Lovecraft.

Chris LaMartina gained greater popularity with the release of seasonal favourite 'WNUF Halloween Special' (2013) and there's said to be a sequel in the works. I'm more excited about his forthcoming project, 'What Happens Next Will Scare You' (tentatively scheduled for a 2019 release), which is said to be in post-production. I also hope there's some truth to the rumours that he's considering asking Lindsey Jordan of Snail Mail to compose a score for a future horror project set in Baltimore; the world is his oyster.
Izzie Harlow presents 'Faces Of Schlock' (2009)
Shawn C. Phillips in 'President's Day' (2010)
Midnight Crew presents 'Witch's Brew' (2011)
Melissa O'Brien in 'Call Girl Of Cthulu' (2014)
'Pristine' - Snail Mail / Records In My Life : Lindsey Jordan

If Chris LaMartina can't secure the services of Snail Mail, he's in the right place. He's already directed electric doom-folk artist Lauren Lakis in 'Witch's Brew' and a thriving local music scene shouldn't omit looking close to home; just up the road for example, in Washington D.C., he'll find Flasher. But Maryland is standing tall right about now; the state that gave us John Waters, Nick Zedd and Chris LaMartina is a hotbed of experimental activity.
'Lead Us On' - Lauren Lakis
'Skim Milk' - Flasher
'Lemon Glow' - Beach House
'Thinning' - Snail Mail

I’ve seen two of his films. I had a real good time with the outrageous HP Lovecraft inspired “The Call Girl of Cthulhu”. Plenty of energy, and unpredictability. If “Witch’s Brew” is anything like this, I need to check it out. However I was somewhat disappointed in “WNUF Halloween Special”. I kinda like it before they enter the “haunted house”, where I found it to be a little dry and anticlimactic. I wasn’t all that taken by its payoff. I guess I was looking for something more supernatural than its grounded, psychotic reveal. The interruptions of the TV commercials, and studio scenes were always amusing.

I wish I could say 'Witch's Brew' matches 'Call Girl Of Cthulu' in terms of creative filmmaking, but in comparison, I'd say it's a bit of an ungamely mess. I think young Chris LaMartina's improved markedly as a filmmaker over time, maturing at a rapid rate. 'Witch's Brew' has some fun ideas and contains enjoyable scenes, but overall, I find the execution beyond sloppy. A mixed bag.
I'm with you on the 'WNUF' halloween project. I recall it as being fun in places, and willfully nostalgic, but lacking bite. I've not seen it in years, maybe this one could do with a rewatch.

My expectations for WNUF probably didn’t help that I watched ‘Ghostwatch’ for the first time the night or two before it. But i’ll definitely check out the sequel.

The early Chris LaMartina movie we haven't mentioned is my second favourite of his films after 'Call Girl Of Cthulu' and that's the slasher picture 'President's Day'. This one made me look into his career. It's rickety and crude, but also very entertaining, especially if you're a slasher fanatic.
