This was a dope movie with elements of Cube and Ex Machina. It’s difficult to pin it down genre-wise, but I’d call it science fiction/psychological horror.
It’s about a man named Frank who wakes up in a sleek, high-tech prison cell where he’s watched over by an artificial intelligence.
Frank doesn’t know why he was arrested, he doesn’t know which crime he’s accused of, he isn’t allowed to call an attorney or anyone on the outside, and while the AI tells him he’ll be held in the cell until he’s “processed,” the AI can’t or won’t answer what that means or how long it will take.
As the days become weeks and the AI is the only being Frank can talk to, there are references to an ongoing war and a highly advanced, AI-driven world outside, a world many people have become disillusioned with.
As time passes, Frank begins to wonder if his machine jailer is operating on instructions from humans who may no longer be alive, whether he may be just one of thousands locked away in a clandestine prison complex somewhere, and whether any of them will survive to tell the world about the remaining prisoners and set them free.
This is a well-written, wonderfully-acted movie that has a ton of hidden stuff/Easter eggs, meta references and layered themes, so that the meaning of the movie — and the reality portrayed in it — may be completely different depending on how you interpret the narrative.
It’s currently streaming for free on Amazon Instant.
