I started Doctor Sleep but in fact am not much of a reader. I haven't kept up with King for a while though I loved Duma Key. The most recent one I've completed has been Mr. Mercedes. Some of my personal faves are Desperation, Misery, Insomnia, 'Salem's Lot, The Long Walk, Roadwork, Thinner, and lots of assorted short stories.

hope you are trolling. king fans including myself consider these books to be among his worst. though i remember quite a bit of INSOMNIA. i guess that means i did not hate it as much as i thought i did.
i love these. especially the long walk.

I couldn't care less the opinions of fans. I avoid keeping a list of sK worsts; I don't like to dislike him, you know? Anyway, Desperation is my personal favorite; I read it at a time when I very much needed that particular story. I think that what I like about Insomnia is that it's so bizarre and different, which I think so happens to be why others don't like it. Lots of fans of lots of artists seem to get stuck with the artists' early stuff and can't move on. Does that describe you? I spent about 10 years at a Stephen King message board and am very familiar with how many fans tend to like which books and vice versa. IT and The Stand are the most popular. The Shining is also a big one. I've read all three but I don't think of them as favorites. i love these. especially the long walk. I've read almost all of the short stories. Those are some of my favorites of his stories.

around 50 pages into this. pretty good so far. any other fans? For some reason I thought you were talking about Wraith by Joe Hill. It's a comic by King's son Joe. I haven't read Joyland but from a quick glimpse it seems like a crime novel more than horror. Is that correct and is he any good at crime?
I finally decided to read Under the Dome but it's so typically King that it's almost a parody. Stock villains, over the top bullies, crraaaaazzzzzy religious folk, supernatural stuff, heroic dogs etc... I'm so tired of Big Jim and his cut rate psycho son already that I'm tempted to read Wikipedia for most of the book and then just read the last 200 pages or so.
I agree that Doctor Sleep and Dumas Key were all right but don't compare to classic early King. I did enjoy the Bill Hodges trilogy which was not really horror. Is Joyland similar to that?

I read it a few weeks back after you mentioned it. It was enjoyable although very short. It wants to be a mystery/crime type story but I think you nailed it best calling it a coming of age story. King tends to do those pretty competently though. I wonder if he has any more great books left in him? At this point, I think his son Joe Hill has caught up to him and maybe even surpassed him. The bst King stuff I have read recently are the Bill Hodges trilogy. The first one is Mr Mercedes. I recommend giving it a try and if you like it then read the whole trilogy.

It's a collection of short stories called 20th Century Ghosts. NOS4A2 (pronounced Nosferatu) is more or less straight horror and is a good one to read if you like Hill's short stories. Horns is good as well but it is sort of unusual. If you're in the mood for an epic horror novel try The Fireman. It's sort of Hill's swipe at a The Stand type novel. Also if you're a fan of comics at all, read The Wraith which is connected to NOS4A2. Hill also has written several other comics although I haven't read any of those yet. Pretty much everything I've read of Hill's I've liked to some degree or other.
