Here are a few cases that I've read about or seen on true crime shows over the years, but unfortunately I've forgotten some details like names, and have had a hard time finding the stories again no matter how much I Google the details that I do remember.
1) [SOLVED: Jennifer Short case] This case probably happened in the '00s. A husband and wife were found shot to death, and their only child, a daughter between 12 and 14 years old, was missing. The daughter was found shot in the head beside a river or stream. No one was charged, and from what I remember the case against the only suspect was weak. He was angry over the sale of a trailer or something like that.
2) Pretty sure this one took place in the '80s. Two different husband/wife couples were murdered in motel rooms in separate incidents, thought to be the work of one killer. One couple had gone to see someone who'd promised to help the husband with his country singing career. (This couple had previously been held hostage for ransom in Mexico when they went to meet someone there for the same reason.) The other couple had gone to meet someone to sell some sort of electronic equipment. There was a main suspect (I think he might have owned an electronics store), but he was never charged and later died of natural causes.
3) Most likely happened in the '00s. A couple were killed by a guy with a hammer. I believe he was related to one of the victims. He made them withdraw money from an ATM before killing them. Neighbors heard screaming, but didn't call the cops. The bodies were later found wrapped in carpet in a closet or crawlspace. From what I recall the suspect was in a car with his father when they were pursued by cops, and the dad (who I don't think had anything to do with the original murders) shot and killed his son before he could be arrested.
4) Likely in the '00s. Two women, and either one or two men, were shot to death in a mobile home. The women were found under the mobile home as if they'd tried to hide. Nobody was ever charged, but there were at least two suspects. One was the woman who owned the land on which the mobile home resided, who'd allegedly had some problems with the victims. Another was a man who was doing time for a crime in another state (Texas?) when authorities finally questioned him. His girlfriend got in touch with authorities to say he'd confessed to her, saying about the female victims something like, "you should have seen their faces". He claimed his girlfriend was lying.
5) Probably '90s or '00s. This happened in Canada. Several people were murdered in an apartment. A couple of people in a neighboring apartment were also murdered, likely because the suspects thought they'd heard or saw the killings. I believe the suspects were either bikers or drug dealers.
6) '70s or '80s. I saw this one on a true crime show. A young girl, maybe 11 or 12, had problems at home. She ran away and hitched a ride (possibly with a trucker). She was later found dead. I remember they showed a crime scene photo of the body. She was dressed and clearly in rigor mortis. The case went cold until decades later when they linked it to a guy who was doing time in another state (possibly Washington, but I could easily be wrong on that point). I remember the detectives saying how he seemed shocked when they started asking questions about this old case, and then be clammed up and claimed he didn't know anything about it. I don't recall if he was ever charged.
