I had fuzzy memories of this movie from back in the 90s and after giving it a second look I realized I never saw the movie all the way through until now. I really enjoyed it much more than I expected. Kurt Russel is at his best as a total badass "Rambo in space" character. Jason Scott Lee is a worthy adversary and Gary Busey is his usual great 90s self. This movie is quite underrated and I recommend it for 80s/90s action movie fans.

I am a fan of action movies, but Soldier (1998) is instantly forgettable and generic imo.

Just no one ever saw it, lol.
For the longest time I couldn't tell that was Jason Scott Lee as the bad guy. Later when I figured it out I kinda freaked a little! He got SOOO big for that! He wasn't that big before and I don't think he's been since either.

Watchable, but forgettable in the end.

Yeah, it bombed at the box, I think that is part of the reason I never gave it much of a chance in the 90s. I regret that now and will definitely watch it again.

I am a fan of action movies, but Soldier (1998) is instantly forgettable and generic imo. That was what I thought in the 90s so I understand you but disagree now. For instance, Kurt Russel trying to teach the boy to kill the snake with the boot is quite memorable and meaningful. I admit some of the movie can be a bit awkward, but the end is very satisfying. I can't say that about most new blockbusters.

It isn't a terrible movie and it does have some good scenes (the snake scene is one of them), but overall the movie just doesn't work for me.

I like the brief Blade Runner universe tie ins. I thought it was a great action film, I saw it in the theater as well.
This is one of the baddest (as in good) pieces of dialogue in the film. Kurt Russell's no non-sense delivery is amazing...
Sandra : How do you know they'll be back?
Todd : Because they're soldiers, Sir. Like me.
Sandra : Why are they doing this?
Todd : They're obeying orders, Sir. It's their duty.
Sandra : Do you know how many there will be?
Todd : Seventeen more, Sir.
Sandra : Oh my God, you can't fight seventeen more on your own, you have to organize us. We're not cowards, we'll do as you tell us, we'll fight.
Todd : No.
Sandra : Why not?
Todd : Soldiers deserve soldiers, Sir.
Sandra : But one soldier, against seventeen. What are you going to do?
Todd : I'm going to kill them all, Sir.

This movie has that 80s/90s total badass dialogue that "gives me chills" and makes me cheer for the character to "take care of business."

Haven't seen it, but I hear that it's supposedly connected to Blade Runner somehow. If it is, then I'd definitely like to see it.

Haven’t seen it in many years. Even back then I remember thinking it was ‘ok’ at best.

I like Kurt Russell's grim performance & Jason Issacs' ruthless colonel; but it's just another noisy 'shoot em up' - following a promising start. 4/10

Not much of a tie in, but it does slightly reference Blade Runner and is considered to be in the same "universe" You can see a spinner in one scene and some of Todd's battle commendations are from Blade Runner and other films. There was also a huge battle scene in the trailer that wasn't used in the film. Todd's service record, displayed on a computer screen, includes the following: The battles of Tannhäuser Gate and Shoulder of Orion (references to Blade Runner (1982)) Receipt of the "Plissken Medal" (reference to Escape from New York (1981) and its sequel Escape from L.A.). **Receipt of the "O'Neil Ring Award" (reference to Stargate (1994)) Receipt of the "Cash Medal of Honor" (reference to Tango and Cash (1989)) Receipt of the "Maccready Cross" (reference to The Thing (1982)) Receipt of the "Capt Ron Trophy" (reference to Captain Ron (1992)) Receipt of the "McCaffrey Fire Award" (reference to Backdraft (1991)) Receipt of the "Dexter Riley Award" (reference to The Strongest Man in the World (1975), Now You See Him, Now You Don't (1972), The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969)) Citations for the Nibian Moons Campaign, the Antares Maelstrom War and the War Of Perdition's Flames, locations referred to in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982).

I thought it was pretty good. Kurt Russell is solid as always.
Why wasn't THIS the 'Doom' movie? It had the perfect setup for it. Unspeaking super-soldier protagonist, sub the garbage planet for Mars, throw in some demons and give him a UAC badge and it practically makes itself.
