I think we've all said what we've wanted to say about the film in these last few months, but at least now the day has arrived for its anniversary. Personally, my opinion on the film hasn't changed since I first saw it. I think it's a good film, believe it or not, although it certainly has its glaring flaws.
A video that is the perfect capsule of the hype and disappointment some fans had for the film:

Still not a very good movie. Duel of the Fates still kicks ass, though.

Still better than Ep II, I guess.

I saw it in the cinemas as a young kid, and everyone I knew as well as seemingly the general public, was amazed by it when it first came out, especially due to the hype. It wasn't until years later, and everything had cooled off, did we start to notice the "real and clear flaws", the film had.
I do appreciate The Phantom Menace a little bit, if only because it's the only one of the prequels to still use some solid practicals. The later two really don't hold up as much visual wise, because while George tried to push technology, his unnecessary CGI lovefest showed through and through.

I still have the ticket stub somewhere. I actually don't remember anything about the movie. I just remember that it really sucked. It was a major disappointment.

I remember watching it at midnight on opening day. Probably the first and only time I did that.

it basically sucks just like solo sucked, and just like tLj sucked. Just like tFa sucked, and all the other prerquels sucked. just like rogue one sucked. See the fact that the first two SW movies were actually good was a fluke. They were lucky to even get two good movies out of this. Nobody involved ever thought the first movie was gonna turn out good , imo. Or that they'd get to do another one. That fact that the empire strikes back being better than the first one was the biggest fluke of all.

Revisionist history cracks me up.
All the people claiming they didnt like it back then because "it was bad" are lying.
I saw it with a group of 20 friends, and they all liked it.
I was the only one who didnt like it, and not because "it was bad" but because it did not look or feel like STAR WARS.

"May 19th, 1999, a date which will live in infamy"
and I hated it from the first moment, no revisionism.

One actor who participated in the film and doesn't look back fondly on the experience is Terence Stamp (General Zod) who played Chancellor Vallorum. He did the movie because of pressure from his agent and because he was a fan of Natalie Portman and wanted to meet her. However, Stamp was disappointed to find out he'd be acting to a piece of paper in Natalie's place on a wall on the day of shooting a scene with Natalie (a process he found boring). He did eventually meet Natalie though and thought she was enchanting. Also, he has said he didn't get along with Lucas and criticised his directing style by Lucas being more interested in visual effects than working with actors (as Lucas is notorious for). www.comicbookmovie.com/sci-fi/star_wars/terence-stamp-looks-back-on-his-boring-star-wars-experience-criticises-george-lucas-a73391

I still like it in spite of the flaws. It's still the best looking film of the prequel trilogy. The "Duel of the Fates" is epic and awesome to listen. I get a thrill from watching the pod racing sequence and the lightsaber duel at the end. That said, I personally feel Attack of the Clones should have been Episode I but with Anakin's training and Palpatine's rise to becoming Chancellor.

Boring film with a nice soundtrack. Even Liam Neeson couldn't save it. I did like the Lego Star Wars catalogue that got released in its wake.
