That is partly true, but after 100 years of movies what do you expect?
Even if you think something hasn't been done before, it probably has.

Not a sequel, not a reboot and not a remake and was the highest grossing movie of 2018.

does black panther really count? Isn't it based on a comic book that already existed? That's why I didn't count it. In my opinion BP does not count as an original idea. But I guess there's a gray area for what counts as an original idea. But I know though that avatar was an original idea.

Here's how you prove that. What was the last movie to come out that wasn't based on something(besides maybe a book)... And it was the highest grossing movie of that year. Which used to happen all the time in the past. Well, Inception, that's what that was.
Done. Why does it have to be the highest grossing movie of the year? If your claim is that Hollywood has no ideas left for movies then all that's needed are some examples of movies that aren't based on books/comics/remakes/whatever. And those are certainly around. They are around, ya...but they probably suck.

Avatar was not an original idea. It isn't directly based on anything but it certainly isn't original. It's a rip-off of Furngully: The Last Rainforest. There have always been movies based on books though, so I don't think that should count against Black Panther.

You know what movie is original. Babe, 1995. That's right, check this movie out!
If you haven't already.

Do all of them feel original?
Do they compare to the best original films of the past?

Like I always say... movies are not about doing something new but taking a idea that's already been done and doing it well.
that tends to separate the gems from just-another-movie sort of thing.
plus, it's pretty much inevitable that people will run out of ideas as you can only do so many things in movies before your just recycling similar ideas. so it's more about how it's done along with the general visuals and locations of a movie that help sell it.
