Just a reminder for all the good Catholics on here. Thursday is the Feast of the Ascension. It is a Holy Day of Obligation... you are required to attend Mass, and refrain from work tomorrow.

If you're not Catholic, and wondering...
It's the day Jesus ascends to Heaven, and promises to send us the Paraclete (Holy Spirit) to guide us.
We celebrate Mass, refrain from work, and it's traditional to have a picnic feast on a hilltop if the weather is nice.

Vatican says you can kick it back to Sunday: “With the prior approval of the Apostolic See, however, the conference of bishops can suppress some of the holy days of obligation or transfer them to a Sunday.”-Code of Canon Law #1246 §2

I don't hold with all that... We celebrate on the proper day here. Sunday is the 7th Sunday of Easter. Feast of the Ascension is the Thursday before.

It is a Holy Day of Obligation here. I don't need to go to confession, unlike people who don't attend Mass or that work tomorrow, I have committed no mortal sin.

So Catholics who wait till Sunday to observe Ascension Day will need to go to confession over it? Can they confess on their way out on that same Sunday and save a trip?

It's a Holy Day of Obligation here tomorrow... You commit mortal sin by not observing it. And, it's not that simple... You can't knowingly commit mortal sin with expecting to just confess your way out as an excuse... Himself knows what is in your heart.

Ascension Day in Germany... Is also celebrated as Father's Day. Groups of men spend the day pulling around 'booze-carts' and getting absolutely smashed.

Being devout, did you never feel a calling to the priesthood, Ned?

Being devout, did you never feel a calling to the priesthood, Ned? No... I can't imagine me doing weddings, funerals, and such. I might consider becoming a secular monk at some point, who knows, I have thought about it 🤷
