I was reading on a high profile murder case from the 80s, the "Preppy Killer" case (dude raped and killed a girl in Central Park, served 15 years, is currently serving a 19 year sentence for selling drugs after his initial release), and it mentions that an Archbishop wrote him a letter of support, and that while awaiting trial he "report[ed] regularly to family friend Monsignor Thomas Leonard, a former teacher".
While reading about this case another one was mentioned, the Bonnie Garland murder case (woman broke up with boyfriend, so boyfriend bludgeoned her in her sleep with the claw end of a hammer, he served 17 years and is now free). Some of the relevant details: "A group led by members of the clergy of Yale's Catholic Church campaigned to have Herrin released on bail. They raised bail money and wrote letters attesting to Herrin's "good character" to the trial judge. Impressed by the campaign, the judge released Herrin into the care of the Christian Brothers in Albany."
And...
"Critics charged that the sentence was the result of the Yale community and, in particular, the Catholic chaplaincy uniting to support Herrin".

Both those cases had the same defence attorney, Jack Litman.

But in general... it's liberals who generally sympathize with criminals over the victims.

Unless they offered bail after he was found guilty I’m not sure what the issue is.
