Bishops' Announcement Still Avoids The Big Thing

This isn't surprising. They're a clandestine organization, at the very root of it. It would be on a par with expecting the Mafia to report malfeasance by one of its' members to the police.

The Catholic Church will probably never completely disappear, but it's probable that these types of scandals, and the subsequent inability on the part of Church hierarchy to address them in a meaningful way (i.e., a way that opens their sanctum sanctorum to investigation and secular justice) will cause an ongoing erosion and withering of membership and increasing skepticism among the more literate and thoughtful part of the faithful. In my own view that's not a bad thing, as attrition and rebellion on the part of followers could force action, lest the whole institution largely dry up and become socially irrelevant altogether.
