Copied from my response to flowery on the old board. these are the most telling stats you can get IMO
BATTERS: OBP and OPS! they are the MOST IMPORTANT stats for offensive value. during the information revolution in the early 2000's (moneyball), GM's and scouts discovered how important OBP was, more imporant and BA and OPS more important than home runs totals.
PITCHERS: you should look at FIP (fielding independent pitching) and adjusted ERA. it takes the defense out of the equation.
K.BB ratio IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ALSO. I have read moneyball and other books like the yankee years that go in depth about sabermetrics and the information revolution.
In baseball, the right stats will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know.
THE QUESTIONS IS: WHICH STATS CAN TELL US THE MOST ABOUT THE VALUE OF A PLAYER TO A TEAM?
THE INFORMATION REVOLUTION ANSWERED THIS QUESTION WITH GREAT ACCURACY. We now know almost exactly how much a player is worth to his team by digging into advanced stats.
the ones i gave you are probably the most important.
as you can see i enjoy discussing this stuff
