The man's movies only make money when he's playing Thor. Lets look at the facts...
Thor: Middling box office
Cabin in the Woods: flop
The Avengers: Thor $$$
Snow White and the Huntsman: Surprisingly did okay. They must have thought "He's a hitmaker! Sign him up!"
Red Dawn: flop
Star Trek Into Darkness: Middling
Rush: flop Thor The Dark World: middling
Blackhat: flop
Avengers: Age of Ultron: Thor $$$
In the Heart of the Sea: Flop
Ghostbusters: flop
Thor: Ragnarok: Biggest hit to date outside of Avengers movies
12 Strong: flop
Avengers: Infinity War: Thor $$$
Bad Times at the El Royale: flop
Avengers: Endgame: Thor $$$
Men in Black: International: Tracking to be a flop
The flops have it. He doesn't open movies strongly on his own. And the movies that flopped weren't critically acclaimed either. So...?

Cabin in the Woods wasn’t that much of a flop. It at least made more than half it’s budget.

Rush (2013) is the only movie of his that stands out from the pack as it's easily his #1 movie in my mind.
but personally... I think the movies of his that do flop are more of a reflection of the movie itself and not really him. because some movies you could have a huge name star in it and they just won't be any good.
You sure about that?
according to Box Office Mojo it made $90.2mil worldwide on a $38mil budget, which is 2.37 times it's budget. I don't see 'flop' with those kind of numbers, it's just not a huge success is all. I would imagine it had to make some profit, right?

Perhaps he's the nhe new Christopher Reeve - massively iconic and popular within his comic book franchise, yet regarded as one-note elsewhere?

Star Trek (2009) (which he was in briefly) did pretty well, but I don’t remember him being in its sequel.

Chris should do a low budget comedy or horror film. Mistake to replace Will Smith.

Too bad about Rush, I never looked at the numbers. It was a good film, although Daniel Bruhl was the better actor in the film.

I don't think Star Trek Into Darkness really counts. I think only his voice was in it.
At least some of these got good reviews like Cabin in the Woods, Rush, and Bad Times at the El Royale.
But also Rush seems to have done all right for itself. Somewhat commercially and very well critically.
Don't forget that he was in 2015's Vacation. I was going to say add it to the flop pile but I guess it actually made 100m off a 30m budget. Which is crazy because that movie is awful.
So he's had bad luck with remakes/reboots (Red Dawn, Ghostbusters, Men in Black), and anything requiring some next level acting (Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, 12 Strong).
He should stick to randomly appearing in comedies, in which he always steals the show (Vacation, Ghostbusters), or he needs to find his own franchise. Not just one he can takeover like MIB.
