liked it, but what was all the hoopla about some big surprise ending?

The surprise is that what seemed like flashbacks are actually in the future.

The surprise is that what seemed like flashbacks are actually in the future. yeah, I figured that out at about the half way mark - I'd heard "surprise ending"
I guess it was a surprise for some, I don't see how.
Anyway, thanks, just didn't know if maybe I'd missed something.

Yup, that was basically it.
I liked the movie for the most part, although I don't think it qualifies as some great entry into the SF canon, and aside from the design of the alien script I found the visuals seriously underwhelming. It takes imagination and some risk to create sufficiently odd and interesting aliens, and playing it safe isn't the way to go.

I think the ending lacked something, but still a fairly good movie.

Easily the most disappointing film of 2016.

I watched Epoch (2001) (free on Amazon prime) and found some interesting similarities to Arrival. Some huge mysterious "monolith" appears and a team (man and woman) is supposed to figure out what it does. THe couple have an interesting relationship at the end of the movie, like in Arrival. It even has some similar sounding music at the beginning. The two stories are different enough that I'm not claiming Arrival is a ripoff of Epoch, but the similarities were interesting. I like Arrival better, but Epoch had some interesting aspects including the interesting ending between the couple who worked together to explore it.

I saw it years ago on the sci-fi channel.

The surprise is that what seemed like flashbacks are actually in the future. lol. I got the privilege of explaining that to my next door neighbor for whom the movie made no sense until I unraveled it for him.
