The first 30 minutes seemed promising. A woman visits her family lake house to celebrate the first year anniversary with her wife. The lake and surrounding woods are seemingly deserted except for the couple and it looks great in a foreboding way. The tension builds nicely as the couple discover they don't know each other as well as they thought. There's a sudden unexpected incident and then the movie sadly becomes increasingly moronic in a lot of ways, Cringe level acting, ridiculous character decisions, plot twists that are laughable and just bad. So much bad.
Critics adored it. Audiences not so much once the stupidity kicks in. I can't help but wonder if critics would have been so forgiving of the ridiculousness if the couple had remained man and wife as originally planned. I have a feeling it wouldn't been as AMAZING and BRILLIANT without the lesbians.

I'm not seeing all of this critical adoration your talking about. The critical response seems to be generally favorable (82% on Rotten Tomatoes but only 66 on Metacrtic), but most of the reviews I've seen sort of echo the sentiment that you put forth; that it's pretty well made, especially in the first act, but that the second and third are a little dumb and fall into this repetitive back and forth for too long. But if your theorizing that it was overwhelmingly adored because of the lesbian couple, it would kind of seem that you're greatly exaggerating things so you can complain about something.
I'd agree too. It looks nice, the acting is generally pretty strong, and there are some real surprises early on, but it does unfortunately lose its way as it tries to pay off on the early tension.
I will say though, that I think it was probably best work I've seen from this director. He's made several things I've seen, sometimes with a partner ( they call themselves the Vicious Brothers for some fucking reason), but none have really impressed me, and that movie Extraterrestrial is fucking awful. This one proved that he has some real skill with composition and montage though, even if the last 10 minutes or so are totally cheap and completely ludicrous.
