I've often thought about what might have happened after the screen fades to black at the end of Not Fade Away. I don't care much for where the comics took things and have been keen to come up with some alternative; and my subconscious apparently delivered. Last night I had a dream about how the fight in the alley in Not Fade Away concluded; and I'm kind of on board with it.
Basically, after a long drawn out fight (that sees Angel's back riddled with arrows), the team is flagging, but still fighting. One by one they fall, Spike, Gunn, Angel - Illyria is the only one still standing, besides the demons sent by W&H. In a fit of rage she summons what stores of power she has left and unleashes a blast that takes everyone else out. Now this being a dream, for some reason they weren't in an alley anymore, but a cavern; and the blast destabilizes it and Illyria makes a break for an opening as the cave starts collapsing - but not before she's manages to collect some of the remnants from at least Spike and Angel - and she slides down an icy embankment, seemingly safe; only for an avalanche to come down on top of her, sealing her in a block of ice, still alive, just sort of contained temporarily. And when she gets out, she plans to set about finding a way to bring the others back.

And then...?

And then...? Oh boy, I nearly forgot about that dream. It certainly was an interesting one. Those sort of dreams that basically become non-existent shows I watch are always entertaining, but at the same time often anticlimactic. I've come up with plot points for plays I've written as the result of dreams. I feel like I had one recently about a show, but I can't remember what it was now or what happened. Then there was one that could be simply described as, "The Doctor's Brother," which produced an interesting story idea for Doctor Who. Wish I could tell you there was more for Angel. From time to time I think about how they could pick that up, especially with the cast aging. Haven't entirely settled on how the fight plays out; because anything that might wrap up quickly or easily or even reasonably victorious for what's left of AI seems almost like an anticlimactic cheat; like they've set the stakes where it would be next to impossible for them to get out of that alley and in order to do it right they'd really have to earn it hard. I've often toyed with the idea that at some point Riley of all people shows up with commandos to pull their fat out of the fire; and he's accompanied by Kate, who after we last saw her was recruited by whatever the Initiative has now become or whichever part of the military Riley's working for. Not sure if Angel would have reached out to Kate or maybe to Riley as a last ditch effort; or if somebody found out about some other way. In any event, I generally go with Spike and Angel being held up in captivity by the government; poked and prodded to test different technological ways of hurting and potentially killing vampires. Like, can they can create an artificial form of sunlight that would have the same effect on vampires? And the answer turns out to be, no, but the artificial light they used had the effect of appearing to age Angel and Spike; and the two only observe this when they finally manage to escape and look at each and are like, "what's wrong with your face?" and kind of jab each other about looking older. I know David in particular has said he has zero interest in wearing the make-up again, but I can't help but wonder if they could achieve the same effect technologically and what that might look like? They did that on Grimm and it was okay, but more than conventional CGI, or computer de-aging, etc., I wonder if they could make use of the "DeepFake" technology to not only make the actors look younger, but also vamp them out in convincing ways. When you think how effective it can be done on the cheap by essentially amateurs, imagine what a production company could do with proper resources and the intentionally staging and production of something with the use of that technology in mind. The studio would have all the necessary source footage to build the model of the younger or vamped faces from; and when filming they could take any needed steps to more flawlessly sync the images, like adding the tracking dots to the actor's face. That might not be fun, but probably save a lot of time and effort in contrast to actual prosthetic application.

I will respond in more detail when I get some time. A quick thought in the meantime, however: I always imagined that an army of Slayers would descend on the W&H demons and, at a minimum, beat them back into retreat. [Of course, Wesley survives and Illyria and Fred are separated in my dreams, too! ]
