Yankovic was another one of those 80's comic acts who was funny in short bursts, but ninety minutes of them onscreen got painful fast.

The movie actually holds up quite well and is varied, with parts that are typical of Yankovic and other parts more like SNL or Rowan and Martin's Laugh in. As the article indicates he largely plays a straight part in the movie.

As the article indicates he largely plays a straight part in the movie. I saw it in the theater when it initially came out--watched it again recently when it turned up on television. It's not terrible, and had its moments, but like most of the SNL-inspired film stuff of that era, I just don't find it holds together all that well on later viewings. Still, I'll agree that the decision to have Weird Al play it predominantly as the straight man was a good one, putting the film a notch or two above what might have been expected otherwise.
