Australia wins the toss and bowls ? Strange. It’s a bit overcast and the pitch is a bit grassy, but it looks a bat first pitch. Worried about Broad picking off the top order again? Apparently Langer was expecting to bat! Wonder if Paine has got a bet on? We are not, repeat NOT, Pakistan thank you very much. 1/86 off 25 overs. Siddle and Marsh look about as threatening as a Labrador Puppy. Bizarre selections, bizarre tactics.

Siddle back in for Starc. Starc did have a decent test match a few days ago. Is he injured? No, Australia believed Siddle would bowl better on this flatter pitch than Starc. Pattinson would’ve been better than both.

Root 50, now into his danger zone...

169/3 at Tea, Root on 57*
England chugging along alright, but they are 2 wickets away from being badly exposed. Curran and Woakes are handy with the stick, but England might be expecting too much from them.

Buttler taking Cummins and Hazelwood to the cleaners.

265/8 - honours about even here I reckon. Mitch Marsh bowled well - swung it and bowled a fuller length. Buttler has played well here, and has done what he likes to do. Opening the shoulders and having a slog. Not exactly top 6 Test Match batting, but it’s what he’s good at.

8/271 at stumps. This partnership has has kept England in it, but they are still 80-100 short of a good first innings. To be honest, the pitch looks a belter. Everything has moved in the air. If England can’t make it swing, they might be in strife.

Well, that's poor by England. Same old problems in that it all starts with Root not converting a start into something meaningful, followed by a procession.
You can't judge a pitch till both teams have batted on it, but you can judge this England performance as less than it should have been. Dropping 4 wickets to M Marsh: please.
And only 82 overs bowled? Please tell me there was rain.

I think Australia got a good ball going (cue the sandpaper wisecracks), but it took them a while to get the right length and Marsh found it. He went from bowling pies to bowling grenades in the space of an over, and it was bowling fuller. All of a sudden, he and Cummins were getting nice movement and England’s runs dried up after an interval and voila, a bit of a collapse.
If, as Hitchcock says it was the overhead conditions, the. England is in really deep trouble. Because Australian batsmen love the sun, and a flat deck to bat on with not much movement. They may get all 3

That has to be one of the worst 8 ball 5s I've ever seen. Went after three wide ones and nicked another through the slips. Warner gone and, if that's how he wants to bat, cricket is the winner.

And Harris does the right thing and adds another chapter to the tale of the worst opening partners I've ever seen in a 5 test series. I believe they said on TMS last night that the Denly/ Burns stand of 27 was the biggest of the series for either team.

Glad they dropped Khawaja and Head for being out of nick.

Is this the beginning of the end of Warner's test career? He's almost 33. Is there anyone breathing down his neck?

Is this the beginning of the end of Warner's test career? He's almost 33. Is there anyone breathing down his neck? If there was, they’d have replaced Bancroft instead of Harris. Warner is still pretty safe for now. I expect him to peel off a century first dig against Pakistan in November.

For the answer to that see my stat from earlier. As bad as his series has been, he hasn't even been surpassed as the primary opener. They'll replace Harris before they replace him.
