I liked them both.

I liked them both. I just did not care for Bonnie Franklin or Linda Lavin at all. I liked Flo and Mel on "Alice". And I liked Barbara on "One Day at a Time". That show had a pretty good theme song, though, and was set in Indianapolis which is the most boring and bland big city in America. Despite the fact that it's close to where I grew up....

I enjoyed Lavin on the several appearances she made on Barney Miller, as Det. Wentworth (she was supposed to have been the first--and only--female cop regular on the show, until Alice turned up and she left to do it), but I didn't find her appealing on Alice at all. I got the feeling the producers pandered to her ego too much, what with all the episodes where she sang, or in some other way dominated the show. Bonnie Franklin could be strident and sometimes hard to take, but she was surrounded by a better supporting cast, imo--and I admit I liked One Day's theme tune way better, lol.

In Lavin's defense, the character Alice was a singer in the movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" which the TV sitcom was based on.

And, alas--if only the TV series had borne more resemblance to its' parent film, one of the better and more underrated 70's movies.

Sorry, but I've never seen or heard of either of them.

Franklin was a bit too curt and not that warm appealing as an actress. She worked in well though with the material, but I feel that Alice had the more fun support. Schneider was just a pain in the derriere, Mel tired to be a pain in the derriere and always got called out thanks to Flo. Come to think of it, Mel was annoying. But I guess I just found Vic Tayback to be an attractive man.

It's hard to say. I watched both of them back in the day, mostly in reruns but choices were limited back then. I can't say I loved either of them.
I liked Vic Tayback on Alice and I like Pat Harrington on One Day at a Time. I also liked Valerie Bertinelli. Both shows became steadily worse the longer they went on (as is common with sitcoms). One Day even brought in a "cousin Oliver" kid at some point if I recall.
So I can't really say one was the most obnoxious. Both were quite mediocre.

I found Bonnie Franklin grating, and Flo's catchphrase "Kiss my grits!" was dopey and unfunny. I did like Schneider, though. These two sitcoms, IMO, couldn't match the obnoxiousness of Three's Company.

Alice had more laughs and better characters. I loved Flo and Vera and Mel, the show could have ran without Alice, people used to just refer to the show as Mel's Diner anyway. Not that I minded the character. I liked Alice better in the movie, played by Ellen Burstyn.
