... while it's being it's own thing, but also not be another generic taking over the world supervillain?? Undoubtedly, if they ever get another Justice League film with Darkseid, he's gonna be compared to Thanos, so what can they do to make him stand out??

Assuming he appears in more than one movie, they can easily top Thanos by giving him a good final movie with a proper send-off.

Making him more regal and godlike in his persona but also more leaning into his villainy than Thanos. Compared with the latter, he is actually worshiped as a literal god with his own planet. I don't want to see him as some misunderstood vengeful zealot. This is Darkseid for god's sake. Make him a classic villain that embraces his evilness.

Unless a creative mind who happens to be one hell of a salesman (James Gunn?) convinces WB otherwise, yeah this seems like the case. Unless they branch off to some spin-off group like Justice League Dark or that Justice Society movie as was rumored a while back.

Now, not only are they late to the party, but Thanos ended up being as good as he could possibly be.

The smartest thing they could have done was beat Marvel to the punch and use Darkseid before Infinity War, but for some ungodly reason, they chose to make Justice League about one of his lamer henchmen. Now, not only are they late to the party, but Thanos ended up being as good as he could possibly be. Darkseid is too big a villain to be the first threat the League fights. Outside of “beating” Marvel to the punch, there’s no reason for him to be wasted as a starter villain. Sure, that’s what the New 52 did, but the New 52 did a lot of stupid things. It makes sense to build him up over the course of several movies, like what Marvel did with Thanos. Still, it is weird that out of all the New Gods that could’ve been used, Snyder decided to go with Steppenwolf. I certainly won’t argue about that being a poor choice. Anyway, there’s not going to be another Justice League film anytime soon, so there’s no point in worrying about him measuring up to Thanos at this point.

Regarding that story arc where he teams up with the League against Braniac, I think you’re referring to the animated Justice League show, where it turned out that Darkseid was actually conspiring with Braniac. Anyway, Justice League: War was just an adaptation of the initial New 52 arc I mentioned earlier. As far as DC animated films are concerned, there was nothing that really stood out about it, and I’d argue that Darkseid in that movie had even less personality than Steppenwolf. He had, what, eight lines of dialogue?

There are other cosmic foes but of lesser renown like Imperiex (who's kind of like Anti-monitor and has ties with Brainaic) and Eclipso (who's like the anti-Spectre) and the demonic Neron. Now Trigon would be awesome for a Teen Titans/Justice League crossover film. Plus people have some familiarity wiht him thanks to the 2003 series. Isn't he on the live action show?

And let's not forget the Tower of Babel arc. Sometimes it's not the most powerful threat, but the most personal. Easy trilogy right there - presuming they got a trilogy. They don't have to copy every single thing the MCU did and in the exact same order. Doing such ran the DCEU into the ground. Did they wait for Captain Marvel to do Wonder Woman? No, they did it first. |
