I mean of course a lot of people like musicals, but I and many others have a deep hatred for this genre.
so what makes you dislike Musicals?

I like musicals.
I believe it's just a stupid macho thing that causes many to think they hate them, and I say "think" because I'm sure many people who profess deep hatred for them have never even seen one.
Musicals throughout most the of the 20th century were mainstream family entertainment, many won Best Picture and were the most popular films of their respective years. And then sometime around say the 1970s, someone tagged "gay" on musicals and it stuck.

I don't know.... those Disney movies are pretty popular. I think if you like the songs you'll like the movie. A lot of musicals have broadway-style music which is not a lot of people's cup of tea

Like I have said before... I think Musicals are the most universally disliked genre among us males. sung dialog gets old quick to etc. so there is a fine line between total crap and something passable or so. nearly the only exception that rule for me so far is... La La Land (2016) (6-6.5/10 ; was a 6/10 on my initial viewing but increased on a re-watch which I did not expect to happen). but I will say that intro where they are dancing around on the vehicles (which I think is something like 5-7 minutes long) is a solid example of what NOT to do in a movie. but thankfully the movie does not linger like that for long otherwise it would have dropped off a cliff quickly. kolchak92I think your right to some degree. but another way to look at it is how many Musicals stand out to be a strong movie straight up? ; it's got to be minimal to nothing for most guys I would assume which is why I tend to think it's one of the least liked genres overall, especially among us males.

I have musicals that I like and dislike. I'm a Sondheim fan (Lou Rawls singing his song "Send in the Clowns" is incredible), but I didn't care for "Sweeney Todd"...the movie or the stage show. I liked "Thoroughly Modern Millie" quite a bit, and I wouldn't be bummed if I never saw "Les Mis" again. "Rent" is a bit garrish for my tastes, but "Team America" is a masterpiece in my eyes. kolchak92 is right. Half of the tunes you'd recognize from Sinatra come from "My Fair Lady." Many more became staples in their time. Musicals had a huge relevance in the pop culture of their time. Overtime the form has changed (and the trend these days is a bit over the top for me...I'd rather be strangled than watch "Glee"), and it hasn't been adapted too well for modern times, but there are gems. The "Southpark" crew seems to 'get it.' Most of the musicals I see today are aimed squarely at a particular demographic, whereas the classics were more broadly appealing. Another good modern musical is "Nightmare Before Christmas", which I bet many might not consider a musical...which is good, because the ones that fail (to me at least) are the ones that have the big group dance numbers and shove the fact that its a musical down your throat. Of course its all a matter of taste, but like jazz for example, the genre has aged kind of weirdly going into modern times.

My first comment got lost when my internet went down but I like Gold Diggers of 1933 and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. The typical musical doesn't appeal to me, however. The numbers pull me out of the plot and the songs don't interest me much. I'd like to see a musical with industrial music or featuring somebody like Enya but I don't think that will happen soon.

I think it's just because as far as 'beyond belief' goes, everybody randomly breaking into song and perfectly choreographed dance for any given situation is more farfetched than say...anything else fantastical, then add to the fact most musicals aren't fantasy movies. That said, my mother, who doesn't like musicals and downright hates most of them, liked The Greatest Showman.

I always say musical is my least favorite movie genre because I’m NEVER in the mood to watch a musical, but when I do watch one I usually enjoy it.

the songs can be so mercilessly awful.. otherwise, a 'recommended' musical once or twice a year is fine.

I think some people hate them because some can be cheesy, campy, over-the-top, over-emotional, etc.

I used to hate them because I thought it was silly that people could break out into song and everyone around them know the lyrics and dance moves.
I got over that, though.

I like them, but I know why others don't.
If you come up with a premise, it'll automatically be part of a genre or a combination of genres. It can be comedy, drama, action, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, crime, etc... This doesn't apply to musical. It also doesn't apply to animation, but that's more of a format anyway. What I mean is that turning a story into a musical is always an artistic choice, so many people have a subconcious rejection towards this element that's not really necessary.

I like the classics. Outside of a very few though (the Greatest Showman was passable), I don't think there has been a truly great musical made since the 1960's.
42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, etc. were amazing (the Busby Berkeley ones).

I generally love musicals, but I don't like some of the roadshow musicals especially some from the 1960s and '70s that were tiresomely long or have poor storytelling with musical sequences that add little weight to the plot.

That. On the one hand, West Side Story is cool. On the other, we are supposed to be scared by a bunch of tough guys doing ballet moves in a tutu and a leather jacket? "When your a Jet your a Jet and you wanna dance and then you wanna prance before you punch a guy in the mouth! East, West, North and South! You are a Jet all the way! We may act like it but trust me, we are not gay!" It stops the flow of the action or dialog and then we have to sit through IMO a boring number for a few minutes.

Like some. Don't like others. Hate some. Same as any other genre.
Some people dislike them for the same reason they dislike black and white films … just because they are "old movies" and they have seen few (if any ) of them and they have a pre-conceived opinion about them. They don't know what they are missing .They have not given them a fair trial.

I dont like them. I guess it's because they aren't really a true artificial reality--no one starts singing spontaneously on a rainy street. I don't often like singing in movies but I don't mind it as much if its inserted as part of a club scene. Or something like Yankee Doodle Dandy where the singing is supposed to be presentations of real stage performances.
I watched KILLER McCOY the other day. Mickey Rooney does a vaudeville routine for a short scene--I liked it.
