Net Trolls appeared!
All trolls have an agenda they have to put forward no matter what, discussing Fred Astaire movies or great flowers in gardening, red, blue, green, black no matter what.

The view that being nice is the same as being weak. Cate Blanchett would agree with you on that^ point, BATouttaheck.

"Us" vs "them" outlook on just about everything which is made worse by the politics that has everyone on edge. General lack of common courtesy on-line and off. The idea that being rude and crude is the same as being funny. Anonymity and no repercussions for ill mannered behavior. The view that being nice is the same as being weak. The ability to take what you want to say to your boss out on total strangers. any or all of the above ?
I would say all of the above, plus some additional ones, sadly. Throughout history, there have always been wolves in sheep's clothing, and the Internet has just made it all that more convenient. Anonymity, the ability to change an ID or avatar and appear as another personality is so easy, and yes, there are certainly ones who have an agenda behind it. Determining those who are genuine is more and more difficult to do, even IRL. I finished a book several days ago that scared the crap out of me. Some extremist had set up a blog, promoting one view point, but the intent was to track down people with that view point - who to target, and not in a good way, because the extremist held the opposite view point. Heads up, all of you on the Politics Board. As vegalyra pointed out, "internet "news" has further eroded people's sense of humanity and the respect for differences of ideas." Our genetically reinforced 'fear of the other' is still going strong and, in my opinion, sadly will always be a factor. I don't think humans can evolve past it enough for us to have a world where different people can co-exist. Eventually it will be our downfall as a species. Yeah, I know, I'm a real 'optimist' this morning. I've had a lousy couple of days. The more I see of the depressing stature of people, the more I admire my dogs. Alphonse de Lamartine

Then I go and read THE FAR SIDE or Calvin and Hobbes or one of your posts (even the downer ones ) and feel a bit better ! Hope your week improves from now on … you are too nice a lady to be having lousy days.

I remember back in the day logging onto IMDb was the first thing I did when I got into work. A place where I can talk about.... Well, just about anything really, but TV and movies?! That 's like my version of going to a coffeehouse and talking politics. Nowadays, you post something and either you get little response, constant jokes (with no attempt at actual conversation), or a just arguing/insults.I am not saying it's this place either. IMDb became pretty useless it's last few years. That is why they took the message boards down. That and trolls. Yes, I am aware they shut down the boards because they didn't want to monitor them.

I think 24 hour news services started this in the 1980's, but internet "news" has further eroded people's sense of humanity and the respect for differences of ideas. I personally enjoy hearing about people's takes on various films even if I don't agree with them but then again I have a "humanities" degree (History) and have always been open to different positions on things. Heck, I don't know how it even happened given that both my Dad and Uncle were brought up by my grandparents, but one is just a half step away from card carrying communist and the other is a die-hard Republican.... haha. Those dinner table conversations are always interesting. They always seem to stay civil though (usually). I don't know what CNN or Fox News has to do with discussing movies on the internet. When I first discovered IMdb, long after the 1980s, I could spend hours there having conversations about TV and movies. Even when I ventured into political or religious territory, I could still have a conversation. Even when it got heated, it rarely was like it is now. Now, the conversation can't even take place. I've screaming at people (on the net) and them me in the past, but we were trying to prove each other wrong. Now? The conversation is gone after the first response. Either people legitimately lose it or are intentionally trolling someone because they enjoy it. It's pathetic. This only became bad the last few years of IMDb imo. I noticed it sometime around the release of The Force Awakens. It got really bad then.

I was merely attempting to connect 24 hour news services and their continuing and expanding popularity with the loss of centrism on positions that seem to influence the way people communicate with others on other topics besides current events. People seem to be getting more and more polarized on all topics, even things like movies and music, and those positions seem to be influenced more and more based on their political leanings.

If there is one thing the current Internet has taught me, it's not to assume you can figure out somebody's political leanings (let alone obsessions) by his/her taste in movies, music, or books. It used to be that if you guessed wrong on someone's party, that someone would correct you reasonably, sometimes gently, sometimes jokingly, with a minimum of embarrassment or rancor. Nowadays, in sharp contrast, should you hazard (I use the verb advisedly) a guess on someone's political persuasion, and happen to guess wrong...look out! You will be lucky if your guess receives nothing worse than stony silence. More likely, you will get flamed to within an inch of your life: "How DARE you assume that I am a Godless libtard/heartless CON-servative/commie leftist/rightwing fascist", etc, etc, ad infinitum and ad nauseam. I probably don't need to say that I have not visited the Politics Board here on IMDb v. 2.0 for months, and have no intention of doing so anytime soon. Civil discussion--yes, and cheerful chitchat and friendly info interchange--is much more likely to be found in arenas like this one (and on most of the movie boards, as well as on the Trivia & Games boards), and I want to thank all of you--too many to mention right now--for making posting in the areas mentioned such an enjoyable and informative experience. My blood pressure thanks you too.

That is why they took the message boards down. That and trolls. well it was a message board without human mods so you could pretty much get away with anything which is why it was probably the craziest place on the internet. I remember on imdb there was a guy under the handle JapanesePleasureMaster who I would see on many threads for many female celebrities who always claimed to have licked their feet. I thought of him as hilarious but some (usually female) found him creepy. Eventually there were enough complaints about him that his profile was deleted.

The lack of consequences for whatever is said is a big reason, in my opinion, for why people on the net think they can say whatever they want, be as rude as they want. That and the fact that people irl seem to have less manners than people had before.

That and the fact that people irl seem to have less manners than people had before. So long as some come here to the politics board to defend the insulting words and criminal actions of one Donald J. Trump, I’ll say what I think is necessary. But if you have a better way of handling it, please let me know. I'm fine with you saying whatever you want in that context. What I meant was people insulting other people on here instead of having a conversation, which is what the thread is about. There are people that come on conversation boards such as this one to be a troll and not converse with them in a civilized manner. Lack of consequences was my reason for that.
