I love Mike Brady and enjoy having a big crush on pre-fro Robert Reed, but my vote for the overall best - strongest - TV dad is James Evans, as played by John Amos on "Good Times". James did not have an easy time, he was put to the test many times, but he never once failed to come through for his family.
The episode where James' father returns (after having abandoned his family when James was a boy) is super emotional. There is nothing quite so exquisite as seeing a strong, masculine man cry. Maybe I shouldn't swoon, but I kinda do. James Evans was awesome! And John Amos was fine! Amos brought an extra dimension to the show, an unmistakable depth that usually doesn't show up in a sitcom.

In animation, Hank Hill and Bob Belcher are the strongest role models. In live-action, Tim Taylor from Home Improvement and James Avery from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air were Dads to aspire to emulate.

You make great points about the James Evans character. It was fun for me as a kid watching the show center around J.J., but do see and agree as a grown man how Amos and Rolle's wonderful characters were wasted because the producers gave the public what it wanted at the time.

Yeah, James and Florida were both great, loving, strong parents/role models. I kind of favor the dad, but Florida was wonderful, too. JJ got on my nerves big time. Even when I was a kid, I did not like JJ. Damn, was he ever annoying. When I watch the show now, it is because of the parents.

On the Father Murphy route, I'll take Pa Ingalls. He was even an angel.

Jock Ewing Bill Adama Ned Stark I cannot stand stand Jock Ewing. I was glad when his character died off. Blake Carrington was so much better, imo. Jock was an asshole.

Tom Corbett Bill Bixby was soooooooo cute! I would have sat on his lap anytime! He was so much cuter and sweeter and more likeable than stiff board Glenn Ford, who did the movie version. Say, is that Oscar winner Myoshi Umeki in the background?
