Without any connection to Skywalker or any of the Original Trilogy characters, future Star Wars movies will make far less money in the coming decade(s).
And they certainly won't be able to bank on relatively unknown actors as new characters.
The only hope might be to have established box office stars play new characters in the established universe.

When I was a kid, GL said in a magazine article that there would be 9 movies in the saga. I've hung around and good Lord willing, will get that expectation fulfilled in December. If there are more, I may watch, or may not. They just won't be nearly as "must see" for me.

We'll see. I think a new slate can be just what they need. The universe is vast enough this can be done without rebooting the franchise.

Without any connection to Skywalker or any of the Original Trilogy characters, future Star Wars movies will make far less money in the coming decade(s). This trilogy is actually faking the connection to the Skywalkers. At least through 2 movies. Luke was essentially cut out of the first movie. The second movie he was an ineffectual hermit until they got to the salt sand planet. But even there his impact and purpose was not without a little murkiness. Even if they continue the Skywalker theme, if it gets too veneer and watered down the fanbase will start to see through it and reject it. The OT characters were a mixture of unknowns and B list "washed up" Hollywood legends. What got those actors past those "shortcomings" was good writing and good character development and archetypes. The OT and the PT didn't depend on that. Again, the OT used a well written story, good character development and archetypes. The PT tried to use the same thing but did suffer from occasional bad dialogue and stiff acting. This trilogy has tried to use more Disney archetypes than SW. Rey as the Disney warrior princess might be the most successful one if not the only successful one. IMO writing has been the biggest weakness. If the next trilogy is to be successful I think it will need more than an influx of name actors. They might not even need that actually. It will need well written characters in the context of the SW universe and SW archetypes. Who has a modern history of doing that? IMO it's Dave Filoni. He has written great characters like Ahsoka Tano and Cad Bane. He recreated Darth Maul into an incredible multidimensional character. And he has expanded on the development of other characters. If they get Filoni involved in the writing (or other writers with his talent) rather than handing it to pop-culture producer/directors like Abrams and Rian Johnson then they could be successful without the Skywalker theme. But they probably won't.

If they get Filoni involved in the writing I'd be down for Filoni, but he'd need to reign in referencing too much crap people will only get if they watch the TV shows. A cool nod is good as long as the movie stands on its own. Saw Gerrera in R1 was done well. Maul in Solo was just stupid....

And Maul in Solo could've come off as an extra dimension that ties it back into the rest of the universe. But it didn't. Poorly written. It just seemed like fan service.

To me, it seems bringing him back now is just shoehorning him in as an excuse to have Ray Park back. If anything, I'd say re-interpret his final duel with Kenobi on the new Kenobi series, but don't try to shoehorn more Maul story into it just so he can be there. Just my opinion....

Maybe but the fact is that the size of the market is increasing, particularly in Asia. They love the blockbusters.
