Ric Ocasek, the idiosyncratic singer and guitarist for the Cars and hit-making album producer, has died. He was 75. New York City police responded to a call about an unconscious man, later confirmed to be Ocasek, in a townhouse on East 19th St. at 4 p.m. EST Sunday. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene, according to NBC News. No cause of death has been revealed. Beginning with the Cars self-titled debut in 1978, Ocasek established himself as a stoic frontman with a sense of humor and melodrama on songs like “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight,” and “Good Times Roll.” As one of the group’s lead vocalists, alongside bassist Benjamin Orr, he sang “Shake It Up” and “You Might Think.” After the band broke up in 1988, Ocasek recorded as a solo artist and worked as a producer, helping sculpt blockbuster hits like Weezer’s Blue Album and Green Album and cult favorites like Bad Brains’ Rock for Light. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/ric-ocasek-cars-dead-obituary-884792/

Damn. I'd like to know the cause of death. It's strange how The Cars were recently inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame, and after 29 years he and Paulina just had a "peaceful divorce". It's almost as if he knew he was leaving.
R.I.P., Ric.

The Cars were like an angular power pop outfit sent back from the future. The band members were all different ages, all brought different experiences to the band. It seemed a great case of timing and they were clever enough to incorporate aspects of several contemporary musical and art movements into their work. They're a band I've come to appreciate more and more with each passing year, particularly the first three albums which are killer. No doubt Ric Ocasek was a visionary.
The Cars brought artistry and a proud aesthetic to their work which has aged beautifully. They embraced erotica - the cover of their second album, as designed by Alberto Vargas, is simply stunning. Ocasek was from Baltimore, Maryland; he appeared for fellow Baltimore native John Waters in 'Hairspray' (1988). He also appeared in Alan Rudolph's 'Made In Heaven' (1987), as ... a mechanic!
Heaven just got a whole lot cooler but somehow the Earth seems a lot less fun.
"We have lost another great in Rock N Roll Hall Of Famer Ric Ocasek of The Cars. Ric and I actually used to be neighbors for a time when we lived in the Hollywood Hills. Ric had a very unique voice for rock n roll, there was just nothing complicated about it and that really gave The Cars an edge on the radio. They spearheaded a simplistic new wave of minimalist rock alongside producer Roy Thomas Baker, much to the delight of car stereos and fans everywhere. Condolences to his family and many fans. We’ll miss ya man."
- Alice Cooper
Thanks for the music, Mr. Ocasek.

I was about 8 or 9 years old when my older brother brought home this album by this new band from Boston (I grew up in Rhode Island). I was a kid, but I was already into bands like The Beatles, Zeppelin, Doors, and The Who. I didn't think even then that any new bands would blow me away, but then started listening to The Cars album. I was blown away and so happy that there was a newer band making great music. That eventually led me to listening to stuff like Devo, Blondie, Talking Heads. Expanding my horizons all started with that debut Cars album.
RIP

Never could stand The Cars, but Ric gets props for producing "Dream Baby Dream" by Suicide and their albums 2-4...(Plus stuff from Le Tigre, Bad Brains Romeo Void etc....)

I always thought they were pre-power pop. Power pop started in the late 60s, nearly a decade before The Cars debuted.

I always thought they were pre-power pop. Power pop started in the late 60s, nearly a decade before The Cars debuted. That's revisionist garbage. Sure, Pete Townsend used the term once way back when, but a lot of people used a lot of terms once. The Who were Mods, hell all of the mod sound could be called power pop now but they weren't called that back then. The Who, The Beatles, The Raspberries, Badfinger, whomever you want to name, none of them were called "Power Pop" at the time. Not until the early '80s as part of the "New Wave" was the term applied to up and coming bands. I'm not going to argue about this, you can think what you like.

Mr. Ocasek produced what is arguably the finest Bad Brains album (well, alongside the s/t debut), Rock For Light.
R.I.P.
Here's my favorite Cars song, it's from the underrated Panorama LP (1980).
