If you're very, very sensitive about SPOILERS, you may want to bypass this. But there are no real spoilers to come, just "spoiler theories". 😉 Moving on...
TEASER/TRAILER
1. First off, in an earlier post I talked about a rumor that Rey would be undergoing "nostalgic" training in the teaser. The rumor turned out to be true, sort of. The actual rumor was that Rey would be training to move around rocks like Luke did in TESB. It turned out to be pebbles and small stones. We get a glimpse of Rey doing this as we hear Luke's voice in the background giving Rey instruction.
2. Based on the things said by Luke in his "voice of instruction" while training Rey in the Force, it seems to imply that Rey is being trained in mastering Force visions. We got glimpses of Luke discovering and developing this ability in TESB. But it was cut short when he ran (or flew) off to Bespin/Cloud City. Some of the scenes in the trailer suggest that we might get more exposition on this type of training in TLJ, and perhaps Rey will get more training in it than Luke did.
3. We see at least one scene where Rey is using a lightsaber in action but she isn't engaged with anyone. The background looks similar to Ahch-To so this might be part of her training. Of course it's also possible she might be moving to engage someone in battle offscreen, so...
4. There's a scene where Poe is running to an X-wing to board it and take off, then it explodes. Coincidentally this very event was part of a supposed leaked script that was circulated around the internet, especially on the old IMDb message boards. Coincidence? Or was that "leaked script"
actually a very early draft. And some of the events written in it survived into the final draft and filmed story of TLJ?
5. We get a scene of Luke with R2D2 in a smoldering, fiery environment with dark, menacing characters approaching. This looks like it could be one of two things: a future confrontation between Luke and Kylo and the Knights of Ren; or (more likely) more exposition on Rey's vision and the events involving Kylo destroying Luke's apprentices and "training temple".
6. A rather superfluous scene of Finn unconscious in some type "medical chamber", unless he gets hurt again.
7. A desert scene involving a spacecraft or large speeder possibly fleeing some new type of walkers... There is a lot of bright red smoke involved from all the craft/vehicles. Perhaps something environmental to the planet or some new type of fuel or even byproduct of a weapon?
8. Space battle scenes! They look intense enough and perhaps an upgrade in the space battle department (like in Rogue One) compared to the mostly ANH rehashed feel we got in TFA.
9. A scene of what definitely appears to be Luke standing in the "doorway" of a cavelike room and looking out onto an arid landscape. We hear Luke's voice saying "...it's time for the Jedi to end." This definitely raises questions about what direction they're taking the Force and what Lightside/Darkside use means?
Commentary: From this first trailer it seems that a considerable amount of the film will focus on Rey training in the Force under Luke's mentoring and tutelage; much like what occurred between Yoda and Luke in TESB (in concept at the very least). And it might be the most extensive content of Force training we see in a SW film yet.
This may score a lot of OT nostalgia points. And it might also satisfy audiences appetites for more exposition on actually demonstrating Force training. But given Rey's instantaneous ability to call up very proficient Force powers (as we saw in TFA) how much training does she need in telekinesis, visions, lightsaber skills? It seems archaic and stifling to the "natural talents" she already demonstrated in TFA. But of course we can't get a full picture of everything involved in this training from a trailer.
Still, my guess is that Rian Johnson is going to ignore and bypass some of JJ Abrams "MarySue and mystery box", especially when it comes to the Rey character. (A few things in this first trailer hint at such a possibility). It would just require too much story and screen time dedication. Especially where it may contradict his own vision. But some have suggested that what Abrams put out in TFA was all part of Rian Johnson's plan. Maybe... Time will tell.
TLJ PANEL
1. A fair amount of fluff. But the most intriguing stuff may have come from Daisy Ridley. When asked is Rey "Luke's daughter? Is Rey a Skywalker?", she nervously grins but very subtly nods her head no. When asked if Rey is "a Kenobi and could be ObiWan's granddaughter, she again nervously grins and very subtly nods her head yes. Was she being aloof, vague or teasing? Or was she actually dropping hints?
2. Ridley actually volunteered a detail that involves her relationship with Luke. Rey is disappointed by some of the things she learns about Luke. And the way she worded it seemed to imply that Luke isn't (or wasn't) the total good guy that she had this image of.
3. Oscar Isaac wasn't present but when Jon Boyega was questioned about whether the Poe/Finn relationship progresses he affirms it. But it's still the same ambiguity of whether they are good buddies or connected homosexually.
4. BB8 makes a hammy, cheesy cameo. Fluff to get the audience pumped up... And Mark Hamill appears giving the most candid and classy opinions and commentary on TLJ and SW in general. He hints that Luke will have a considerable role and that he liked the direction that Rian Johnson took his character in the film.
5. Kelly Marie Tran is the only new character appearing on the panel. Rian Johnson confirmed that she has the biggest role and most screen time of all the new characters. She is said to be an irrelevant, background maintenance person for the Resistance who is suddenly thrust into the important events and destiny of the saga.
Commentary: Based on some of the comments from the panel about Luke, I now think it's possible that Luke may actually have been training Ben (Kylo) to use the Darkside but control it and keep it subservient to the Light. Also, some things in the teaser seem to suggest that Luke might be training Rey to balance between the Darkside and the Lightside. Perhaps Kylo became dissatisfied with Luke's training to "balance Lightside and Darkside". Or perhaps Kylo didn't progress as much as other students. Then maybe Snoke seduced him with the promise of being a better master. Just a theory...
Also, Luke (in the OT) was part super prodigy, part awkward, bumbling rookie. (We saw his many mistakes and times he had to be saved in the OT). I wonder if they are trying to split Luke's characterization between Rey (super prodigy) and Kelly Marie Tran's character: Rose (bumbling newbie)? From the description of her character it seems like Rose might be that type of character.
Also, it was hinted that we might see some real action from Luke, perhaps even new powers! But it'll be interesting to see how much original vision comes from Rian Johnson or how much effort will go into answering to (and harmonizing with) all of TFA. Or will we get hoodwinked by the trailers and get the same TFA formula?
