1. He snuck on the ship leaving Mars, claiming they won't succeed without him. What is the basis of that claim?
2. Did anyone else notice the narrative link between his disgust at the moon's food court and the pirates who attacked them?
3. How feasible is it to space walk through a ring of Neptune while holding a shield?
4. Why did he even park on the opposite side of Neptune's rings from the Project Lima station in the first place?
5. Why wasn't he arrested and tried for murder when he got home?
6. Lost City of Z was an amazing story within a rather poorly crafted movie. How did this James Gray fella land a big budget space epic starring Brad Pitt?

I agree with all your plot points , the movie doesnt make much sense, and it is so slowly paced most audience will fall asleep.
But it has beautiful visuals and a score from Max Richter that is to die for.
Fox probably thought Brad Pitt will be the main draw and thats why audiences will show up, but I cant see this clear more than in the 50-60 million range at the domestic box office.
The budget of 80-90 million is not too high but it will need overseas to get it in the black.

1. He snuck on the ship leaving Mars, claiming they won't succeed without him. What is the basis of that claim? My thinking was that he knew they planned on simply nuking the space station, and he wanted to try to get his father off of it first. It was a waste of time, of course, and they all died for nothing.
2. Did anyone else notice the narrative link between his disgust at the moon's food court and the pirates who attacked them? No.
3. How feasible is it to space walk through a ring of Neptune while holding a shield? Definitely puts the "fiction" in science fiction.
4. Why did he even park on the opposite side of Neptune's rings from the Project Lima station in the first place? Hell if I know.
5. Why wasn't he arrested and tried for murder when he got home? My only thought was that by arresting him, they'd have to admit to a lot of things they did't want to be public knowledge. Just like they lied about his dad, making him into a hero, in order to protect their image, perhaps they did the same with Pitt.
6. Lost City of Z was an amazing story within a rather poorly crafted movie. How did this James Gray fella land a big budget space epic starring Brad Pitt? Looks like Pitt was a producer. maybe he just really wanted to work with James Gray, and his star power alone was enough to get people to throw money at t the project.

This thread seems like a veiled ad for Ad Astra.

This went unexplained, but I'm thinking the idea was he parked on the opposite side of the Neptune rings so that his ship couldn't fire the nukes at the station (remotely by Space Command, or an AI or something). Also CrepedCrusader it wasn't a complete waste as he returned with all the project's data.

I'm on the fence if I should see it because it looks like a cross between Interstellar and Contact and feels too soon for another astronaut movie. I'm almost leaning toward Rambo instead because at least I know what to expect.

Call me crazy but it sounds like you just described Rambo.

I enjoyed it. I wish screenwriters would figure out that you can create a perfectly engaging story without breaking the laws of physics every five minutes.
