I just watched The Amityville Horror (1979) for the first time. The general premise of a newlywed couple entering into a haunted house held promise, but not much happens or even matters outside of the occasional scares in terms of the narrative. Father Delaney and the investigator subplots are particularly pointless. Nevertheless, the score was pretty effectively well done although its use of shrieking strings makes it sounds like the theme from Psycho. The sequel Amityville II: The Possession is a much better, far creepier and infinitely more eventful film.

Just watched 'House of Evil' (1978)...
Quite enjoyable, and a YouTube freebie, if anyone is interested.
It's a masterclass on when not to take over an old large rambling property.
1. It's isolated. 2. Been empty for some time. 3. Bars on windows. 4. The guy had it built then died young. 5. The 'Indians' wouldn't go near the area, they called it the valley of the devil. 6. One of you sees a ghost whilst being shown around. 7. A piece of ceiling falls on your head whilst being shown around. 8. The bloke sent to clean the place ahead of your viewing has disappeared. 9. Your dog goes weird, and attacks you. 10. There's a trapdoor in the cellar floor, locked shut by a large metal crucifix.
All the signs were there, but they still take it 🤷♀️

Thanks TheSowIsMine and OrsonSwelles for your replies. I think I'll given Mother a view.... eventually... one day... maybe! Congrats also to those who have reached the quota and I mean this sincerely. Even though horror is my favourite genre, I'm really struggling to get back in the race for the final push (I only have 3 more myself to reach the quota). So I've decided to leave it a couple of days and finish with mostly films I've already seen and like/love. If I carry on with first time views (which have been mostly misses than hits) I'm afraid I'll be put off horror genre for good! It's starting to feel like being force-fed chocolate. This is why I'm sincere in congratulating folks here.

Could Venom(18) be horror?, I see the sequel is a horror over on IMDb

TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID (2017) is now my best FTV so far - a fairytale/horror set in Mexican slums where a group of homeless children are hunted down by a crime boss. The child actors are excellent. A beautiful little film
If you want laughs and/or gore, avoid, If you want something akin to Let The Right One In or Devil's Backbone, give it a go

Watching Ma (2019) and Octavia Spencer is giving off some real skin lamp shade vibes.

I finally saw Alice, Sweet Alice and was disappointed in all the reverance I always perceived this had as a horror classic.
Am I alone in not thinking much of this one?

No, you're definitely not alone. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find more than a handful of folks here who would consider it anything more than a cult oddity. It's got a mean streak and a few memorable moments that I think certain folks who saw it back in its day/the VHS era might gravitate towards, but it's a pretty shabby and poorly constructed film taken at face value.

So can I officially say I've completed one part of the challenge: watching 16 movies for the first time? I've now seen 19 firsts. While I've decided to count any movie listed as horror on IMDb, the listing of 'horror' for some is tenuous at best.
My list so far, from best to worst:
The Invitation (2015) Head Count (2018) Life (2017) Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker [aka Night Warning] (1981) Happy Death Day (2017) The Possession Of Hannah Grace (2018) In The Tall Grass (2019) It Chapter Two (2019) Les Affamès [aka Ravenous] (2017)
Apostle (2018) Rabid (1977) Our House (2018) The Purge (2013) The Domestics (2018) The Purge: Anarchy (2014) The First Purge (2018) Patient Zero (2018) Totem (2017) Slender Man (2018)

Anyone see the Alien rerelease? It's playing in Century theaters today and I think tomorrow.
Getting my ass kicked by the challenge this year. So busy and my heart's just not in it (yet?).

I remember reading a lot of about Alice, Sweet Alice on IMDB and it seemed like it was getting a lot of raves from horror fans and as a horror movie fan, I figured I'd better check it out. I did...and I never want to waste my time like that again. Didn't like it. It's not that I found it bad...I just didn't find it all that interesting.

I just watched Mother! That was an interesting way of doing a bible/religion story. I'm afraid to watch. Heard there is a part that's really terrible, and don't know if I'm up for it. I'm on the fence about watching. Did you like it?

I am sorry I don't update more often, but this is what I've watched since my last post:
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
The Red Queen Kills Seven Times (1972)
Dead of Night (1945)
The Prophecy 3: The Ascent (2000)
Strays (1991, TV Movie)
Trucks (1997, TV Movie)
Desperation (2006, TV Movie)
Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004)
Room 6 (2006)
The Mad Ghoul (1943)
The Mad Doctor of Market Street (1942)
The Strange Case of Doctor Rx (1942)
Of this bunch, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, Dead of Night, and The Mad Ghoul were definite standouts.

As for the part that is terrible, its very short and you will probably see it coming so you can close your eyes(and maybe ears as well).

Sometimes what you DON'T see and hear is worse . . . imagination is a very powerful thing.

Haven't done it this year, but after reaching 17 never before viewed films and overall 32 total views, I just may start this weekend!!! Of course, I'll add them to my challenge. Some of the first time horror views I wasn't enamored with. I don't like blood, guts, gore, violence - gratuitous or otherwise - some a lot of the films out there have a lot of that. Yuk! I like the psychological element in horror.

I started watching Hell House LLC 3, but I cant remember if I have seen the other two... There are just so many movies with either the word Hell or House in it.
