IMHO, a very muddled plot that made no sense whatever.

I saw it in the theater. I was entranced and didn't want to leave the theater. I sat through the entire credits and only got up because the lights came back on and I was forced to come back to this world.
One of the most visually perfect films made in the past 20 years. The soundtrack also was mesmerizing and fit with Vangelis' original score.

I was completely floored and fully immersed into the story. I also sat through the entire credits thinking about what I just had seen. It felt like a movie perfectly made for me. Visually unbelievable (best Deakins cinematography imo), perfectly cast with great performances, fantastic world-building, a really good ambient soundtrack, it has everything. And I personally really love slow-burn sci-fi (like Ad Astra last month) so I was never bored in the slightest. It's pretty much the perfect encapsulation of why sci-fi is my favorite genre. And I can't wait for Villeneuve's next sci-fi epic 'Dune'. Still my favorite movie of the decade (#3 in my all-time list) and also my favorite theater experience of the decade together with Dunkirk and Hereditary.

I was captivated and fully mesmerized by the film. The cinematography by Roger Deakins is one of his career's best and I felt he should win an Oscar for it. It honored the original film and its theme of what makes us human.

Overall I found it a great homage to Blade Runner , but it also unfortunately seemed like a copy of the original , only mimicking the original thriller . There has been an effort to keep the story going , but they have used the same plot devices as the first movie . Leto's Niander Wallace replaces Turkel's Eldon Tyrell . Gosling's K replaces Harrison's Rick Deckard . And Sylia Hoeks' Luv replaces Hauer's Roy Batty as the tortured and tormented replicant who yearns for more . I could go on . But it is a good mystery movie that promises more , which I suspect will be continued in a series .
The problem with Hollywood and recent reboots or remakes , is they have thrown out the past including connections with their extended universes , such as relationships with the books and previous movies . It is obvious they are doing everything to hook new fans with lots of new action , but I wonder how this will really fare , in the long run ?

Didn't like it. I still don't like it. It's like they wanted to remake Blade Runner but were afraid to. It plays like a cheap facsimile of the original, minus the soul and the brain. It's not the worst movie ever made; it's visually arresting and the score is fantastic. But it's devoid of thought. Leto plays a cartoonish villain with a nonsensical motivation. Luckily it lost so much money they probably won't torture us with the third installment until at least 2049.

I thought it was amazing. I loved it.
I had already become a huge fan of director Dennis Villenueve, and this movie just confirmed it for me. He's a genius. And so is Roger Deakins, cinematographer (who won for best cinematography for this, and will again this year for 1917). And as we can see for ourselves based on this thread alone, most people thought it was actually a very good movie. I remember the critics being very favorable to it too.
BUT the audience wasn't there. Why? There are several reason IMO:
This movie fits into the category of 30 years too late sequels of which there are tons. Interest in those is waning. Its a sequel to a movie that did not do so well in the first place when it came out way back when. Its a sequel to a movie that only has a cult following nowadays. Its a dystopian type futuristic movie with lots of tech. This is in part what killed a movie that came out only a few months before: Ghost in the Shell, and killed another movie that came out a few months later: Alita Battle Angel. There's an aversion to movies of that type. I don't know why. And, like the first movie, it has a lack of action and a faster pace that todays audiences seem to need.
But IMO one of the best movies of the year (in my top 5), well deserved Oscar for cinematography, and the best SFX scene of the year in the scene where Ana De Armas and Mckenzie Davis are morphed into one. Amazing! By the way kudos for break out performances for three ladies in the movie: The above mentioned Ana De Armas, Mackenzie Davis, and particularly Sylvia Hoeks who plays the villainess.

I dunno what you're on about, but Alita: Battle Angel wasn't released a few months after 2049. BR 2049 is from 2017, A:BA is from 2019.
Also, BR's original director Sir Ridley Scott said he thought 2049 was way too long.
