I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. Lots of laughs in the theater during the scene with the midget and the door.

Ugh as if people really need that fantasy in his head being spelled out on screen. Probably my biggest gripe with the film. It was obvious she wasn't there even as it was first happening. They established it with the Murray fantasy early in the film, and there's no reason anyone in their right mind would associate with this guy. The reveal was unnecessary; the flashback with her there and then suddenly not there was just an insult to the audience. They may as well have made the following statement in parenthesis on the screen. (SHE WAS NEVER REALLY THERE, FOLKS! GET IT? THIS GUY IS NUTS!) That's your biggest gripe? They did that in just a few seconds, hardly wasting any time on it at all. Was it truly an insult to your intelligence?

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. Lots of laughs in the theater during the scene with the midget and the door. I thought that scene was the most disturbing. I in no way even had nervous laughter here. You hear the midget dude crying out, but don't see him and I thought the manner in which he voice acted that scene was superb. It then cuts to him after the fact and it was very impactful, right up-until Arthur got up to unlock the door chain for him.
Yes, I enjoyed the film too and went in with zero expectations. It looked too bleak and depressing from the trailers. I came out feeling a bit distressed, but not depressed. Nice slow burn into insanity, with excellent cinematography, sound effects and music to enhance it all. The Dolby Atmos was great.
There was lots of nervous laughter in the theater in that scene. I agree, the midget really nailed that scene and sold it. Hard to imagine what someone would do in that situation. When he goes to the door relieved but then finds he can't reach the lock.. Everyone could feel the dread. I really enjoyed it overall. Joaquin Phoenix was amazing, he was the reason I went to see it (I'm not a superhero movie person). Loved the creepy music too.

Would it be better if it was my third biggest gripe?
