Oscar chances for Joker- Me first:
Joaquin Phoenix? - definitely a nomination (or else there's no justice), and quite possibly the win. IMO there is no single greater male performance this year so far, so he should win, but who knows what'll happen...
Best picture? nah, too dark for anyone to endorse it. People in the industry can be cowardly ( www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/oscar-voters-react-joker-avoiding-it-1245781? ).
Best Director? Doubt it
Best script? Doubt it
Best cinematography? Good chance there. It's beautifully shot, and the production design is phenomenal as well.
Anything else? Doubt it
So IMO its best chances for an Oscar lie with Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor. Otherwise, the movie is too dark for the Academy to endorse. Its a darkly brilliant film, if only too nihilistic.
Thoughts?

I havenโt seen it unfortunately but agreed that academy members are probably almost as woke as critics. Sure, theyโre generally older and more discerning than what passes for an RT-approved critic but if that trash Black Panther could get nominated then Joker wonโt be. Quality has nothing to do with it. Joker was just released at the wrong time. Itโs a PC-fascist world.

Best picture? nah, too dark for anyone to endorse it. Why do people think Joker is too dark for Best Picture? The Silence of the Lambs won an Oscar for Best Picture.

Best Actor is definitely likely, but Best Picture might be out of the question. Hopefully it can also get nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.

I think Actor is a lock. And I wouldn't rule out Picture yet given Bohemian Rhapsody was able to make it in despite also having controversy and divisive critical response. High box office and audience support could carry it.
