I would recommend the Peter Gethers trilogy The Cat Who went to Paris, A Cat Abroad and The Cat Who'll Live Forever if you are looking for true stories, also Cat, Thy Name is Edith and Edith The Cat Who Ate an Elm Tree by Roz Young. My favorite fiction series featuring cats are the Joe Grey series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy (as well as her stand alone novel, The Catswold Portal), the Mrs. Murphy series by Rite Mae Brown, The Cat Who series (these cats don't talk) by Lillian Jackson Braun and the Midnight Louie series by Carole Nelson Douglas. These are all a fun and quick read.
