The pooch slowly takes his leave right before Shane and Chris come to blows and again just before Shane and Wilson start slingin' lead. Smart guy.

Lassie Come Home (1943)
My favorite of the classic Lassie films. I also really enjoyed this 2005 remake, Lassie, starring Samantha Morton, Peter O'Toole, and young Jonathan Mason.
Another one I've always loved is Goodbye, My Lady (1956).

Benji--starring Higgins, the dog from Petticoat JunctionQuill: The Life of a Guide Dog--docudrama about a guide dog in Japan White God--sad, haunting movie with some unforgettable visuals Hachi-Ko--Japanese version of true dog story The Journey of Natty Gann--unjustly forgotten Disney movie about a girl and her wolf and, for fans of tacky TV movies: Devil Dog, the Hound of Hell--Bad dog! Bad movie!
