Halloween 2018 just completely ignored all of the sequels something that the very series had already done before when Halloween H20 ignored Halloween 4, 5 and 6.
The upcoming Terminator is also ignoring the last three movies that released.
There may be other examples though I can't think of any right now.
Do you like the idea? Does it make you more interested to see it when they're practically saying "Ok this has one has nothing to do with all those other crappy sequels, this is a follow up to the one you actually like!"?
Or does it put you off knowing that sequel was just ignoring what had already been established. Things they'd maybe built on that were now just be tossed into the garbage?

Works fine for the various Godzilla series.

If it is done in a way that works and the Movie itself is Good then I am all for it.
That being said, I actually like the 2018 "HALLOWEEN" Movie.
I think that David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Jamie Lee Curtis, and John Carpenter all did a Very Good Job of making that work and also making a Pretty Good Sequel as well.

It really just depends on how well the movie is executed and if it has better justifying its existence. I think Halloween (2018) is a fairly well-made movie and a good continuation to the original, since the brother-sister reveal in II didn’t work out as well as it should’ve been. I realize that I prefer them not being related since it adds less convenience to the whole thing. I’m still glad that we have the other movies for that long-running storyline, though. It’s really the more traditional angle for the franchise.

It nearly needs a perfect storm of endless poor sequels, with enough sequels that ppl still kept paying to see, combined with the original auteurs of the classic to reformulate & try again. John Carpenter & James Cameron are no slouches.
In the case of Halloween 2018 I remember thinking I could accept both avenues as separate lanes of fan fiction. The original sequels could still be acknowledged as a form of alternate universe aside H2018's. Those sequels while not hall of famers, did the job for the most part upholding the Myers' lore.
Terminator 3, Salvation, & Genysis or whatever on the other hand... lols fcuk no. Terminator 2019 will erase those from existence for me. Even then, if this movie is weak, I can merely ignore it also.
