He's one of my favorite actors. It's a shame he never won an Oscar.

At the same time, the one thing lacking in Monty's filmography is a classic still revered within modern times as well. Brando had The Godfather, Stewart and It's a Wonderful Life etc.

I finally saw the search (1948) recently. Obviously well intentioned and well done, but was not that enthused by it - unlike some of his other highly regarded movies.
top 5.. red river the heiress a place in the sun from here to eternity wild river

"he had so intensive eyes" He was great as Prewitt in From Here To EtenityHe was also rather passionate and troubled in I Confess, and gives a great undervalued performance John Huston's Freud/ The Secret Passion is undervalued, in my oppinion. Red River was great too offcource! (The Duke doesn't kiss his hands, Monty is is simple lighting a cigarette) Lonelyhearts 1958 is one of those movies that I've wanted to see but has always eluded me

It's almost ghoulish to watch him in RAINTREE COUNTY --
-- impossibly handsome in sequences made before the accident, terribly scarred in scenes shot after the accident.

I always had a soft spot for the Defector (his last film). He's obviously not well, looks like a skeleton with clothes on. However, the film is pretty good and Hardy Kruger is at his usual outstanding self.

I was deeply impressed by his performance in Judgement At Nuremberg, especially the scene of being examined/tormented by defense attorney Maxmillian Schell.

A tortured soul due to his closeted homosexuality.

I was deeply impressed by his performance in Judgement At Nuremberg, especially the scene of being examined/tormented by defense attorney Maxmillian Schell. He was a train wreck by the time Judgment was made (so was Judy Garland). But Kramer got another great performance out of him. Or Monty was so damned good he could act even though he was a wreck. Can't decide.
One of the great "What If's" of movie history. If not for the accident, the booze and the secret life (wouldn't have mattered now), he could have been of the Mount Rushmore of male actors. Everyone was cheated. I've only missed two, The Big Lift and Freud.

I was deeply impressed by his performance in Judgement At Nuremberg I guess because of his post accident decline, he was ideal for that role. A pale shadow of his former self.

Clift was meant to play a shattered person in Judgment At Nuremberg and at the time he was ideal for the role.

He also nearly had so many roles ugh. Did you hear why Clift backed out of Sunset Boulevard? Apparently because he didn't want to draw attention to his clandestine relationship with Libby Holman. That was only a minor - VERY minor - reason. Clift was always troubled, had alcohol issues, drug issues, and was not reliable and was also in very poor health. His life was excruciatingly painful and dysfunctional, and any set he was on became explosive. He was a talent, but not a very reliable one.
