I have to admit I loved the original Mini-Series, I don't care if it was cheesey. The Stand used to be my favorite King book until I read The Dark Tower series.
The cast so far is getting pretty spectacular.
James Marsden - Stu Redman
Jovan Adepo - Larry Underwood
Whoopi Goldberg - Mother Abagail
Amber Heard - Nadine Cross
Brad William Henke - Tom Cullen
Katherine McNamara - Julie Lawry
Daniel Sunjata - Cobb
Owen Teague - Harold Lauder
Eion Bailey - Teddy Weizak
Heather Graham - Rita Blakemoor
Greg Kinnear - Glen Bateman
Hamish Linklater - Dr. Ellis
Marilyn Manson - Unknown
Alexander Skarsgård - Randall Flagg
Nat Wolff - Lloyd Henreid
Odessa Young - Frannie Goldsmith
Henry Zaga - Nick Andros
I hope Amber Heard doesn't suck the scenes of life she's in. Some times she acts so wooden it's horrible. Nat Wolff is a little younger than I imagined Lloyd Henreid to be. Same with Greg Kinnear playing Glen Bateman. With Heather playing Rita means they aren't having Larry leave New York with Nadine and then her leaving him outside of NY (like in the original Miniseries). He'll leave with Rita. They changed the race of Larry Underwood, but his race isn't important to his character. They may have to change some of the dialogue. Larry asking his Mom if she heard his song yet and she says you sound black (uses the n-word in the book I think). Larry replying "That brown sound sho gets around" probably needs to be changed. They could leave it in turning it to more of ajoke. Like with Red in Shawshank. In the Novella Andy ask's Red why they call him Red. He replies "Maybe it's because I'm Irish." Not much of a joke. When they left it in the movie and Morgan Freeman says it makes it a decent joke. Manson intrigues me. He could just be a bit character like The Rat Man or the Monster Shouter. He could be more substantial. I think he probably could be a good Trashcan Man. Or they could go against type and make him one of the Boulder Free Zone characters.

Never understood the love for that book. Over long maudlin un nuanced tripe. King can be a hopelessly black or white sort of storyteller at times.

It was my first Stephen King novel and, for a while, my favorite. I always pictured Jennifer Aniston as Frannie but was the 'it' girl at the time and everywhere.
I remember watching the mini-series and I liked parts of it. The cast was nothing like I pictured from the novel but that's ok. Different medium.
Overall, it was a good series. I haven't seen it since, which is maybe 20 years gone by now.
I hope the new series is a big hit.
I do not like Whoopi Goldberg at all.

I pictured Christina Hendricks as Nadine. And Justin Timberlake as Larry Underwood, though I guess just making him black is a little simpler than "black sounding". Marsden is also a little pretty for the rugged Redman I pictured, though he's a really good actor. Whoopi is perfect casting.
I never saw the 1994 series because I didn't want it to taint my image of the book. Little wary of this one for the same reason.

General thoughts....they all seem too young and too pretty. It makes sense for Frannie and Harold to be a bit on the young side...and Julie...but why Lloyd? He's suppose to be a bit of a career criminal and a defacto leader of Flaggs side. I expect a little more mileage on him.
I like Flaggs casting and Harold and Stu are fine. Most are unknown to me.
