Anna Moffo was an opera singer from Wayne, Pennsylvania who moved to Italy (her parents were Italian). She acted in a number of films and built a strong relationship with director Michele Lupo. She sang the works of Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Bellini, Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. She's recognised as one of the great Coloratura sopranos of her generation.

When I bought my very first opera recordings, I got two sets at the same time. One was Pagliacci and the other was the 1963 RCA recording of Rigoletto with Moffo, Robert Merrill, and Alfredo Kraus. Anna Moffo was a big part of my growing interest in this popular art.

Although my mother and her sisters listened to opera when I was a boy, I never took much notice until seeing 'Mean Streets' (1973). I liked the use of opera on the soundtrack.

I don't know if this film exists, but Coloratura soprano Amelita Galli-Curci is said to have acted in the short film 'The Madonna Of The Slums' (1919), directed by George Terwilliger.

Some more with Anna Moffo, with Nicolai Gedda from La Traviata:
The reason I've heard about Anna Moffo is because she was on a Christmas album I used to own.
